Federico Chiesa may still have life in his Liverpool career yet after last weekend’s goal vs Bournemouth.
The Italian creative midfielder appeared to be resigned to ending his stint at Anfield earlier this year after it appeared his chances in the first-team would be limited.
Liverpool boast a number of attacking midfield options already and with the style Arne Slot wants his side to play football, it seemed as though Chiesa’s days were numbered in front of the Kop.
The playmaker, 27, was thrown on in Liverpool’s 4-2 win over the Cherries in their Premier League match day one opener back on Friday evening.
And he shocked the crowd and his manager, somewhat, when he popped up to score the goal to put his side 3-2 up on the night before a late Mo Salah finish would put a bit of gloss on the scoreline despite Newcastle target Antoine Semenyo‘s double.
Federico Chiesa wants Liverpool stay
Chiesa looked to be on his way out of the Premier League champions’ squad after he was left at home by his manager for the club’s tour of Asia in pre-season.
He and former teammate Luis Diaz both missed the trip and that ultimately proved to be worth something where the Colombian was concerned as he departed for Bayern Munich a short time later.
Celtic were linked with a loan switch for Chiesa in what would have been a stunning move for the Scottish Premiership giants but we at FootballBlog understand a move to Scotland was not all that intriguing to the player.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed via his social media channels that Chiesa made it clear to Slot and to the club that he wanted to stay and fight for a spot with the Reds.
He had a “clear desire” to remain a Liverpool player even with everything seemingly working against him.
And now it is being reported that Slot, too, has changed his mind and is more open to the playmaker sticking around.
Following the win over Bournemouth on Friday, the Dutch gaffer had his say on his player.
“As long as he’s here, he’s definitely at Liverpool and I have no reason to believe that something is going to change,” the head coach said.
“He had a hard time last season, getting his match fitness ready.
“Unfortunately for him, he missed out on our Asia tour as well, so then you miss quite a lot – not only him, but Joe Gomez the same; we’ve also lost Conor Bradley in the end.
“Federico, when we needed him, I brought him in. At 2-2, you need a No. 9. We brought him in and he delivered.
“That’s always positive for your future at the club.”
