FIFA Intercontinental World Cup – December 2024 Fixtures

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup is a new international club competition set to debut, distinct from the existing FIFA Club World Cup.

It will feature the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the Copa Libertadores in a single match, effectively serving as a modernized version of the original Intercontinental Cup, discontinued in 2004.

Unlike the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, this competition emphasises simplicity and prestige, focusing on a direct clash between the champions of Europe and South America.

It is designed to revive historical rivalries while appealing to fans seeking high-stakes international club football.

The newly formatted tournament, part of the 2025 sporting calendar, reflects FIFA’s efforts to bridge traditions and modern-day football excitement.

European champions Real Madrid have a clear path to the final.

This format differs from the Club World Cup, where Champions League and CONMEBOL winners traditionally advanced directly to the semi-finals.

Concerns about player welfare and the congested European calendar have been addressed by granting the European champion immediate entry into the final, reducing their fixture load.

Whether Carlo Ancelotti would be in the dugout when Los Merengues take on the winners of another playoff tie remains questionable.

Al-Ahly will take on the victor of another quarter-final meeting between Pachuca and the CONMEBOL champions in the semi-finals.

However, Ancelotti’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu is under scrutiny following Madrid’s miserable three-game losing streak in the Champions League.

Ancelotti lamented Kylian Mbappe’s lack of confidence during his post-Liverpool conference via ESPN after overseeing a dreadful 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Wednesday.

But with the reigning La Liga holders joining the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on December 18, there’s plenty of time for the trophy-laden manager to turn Madrid’s fortunes around.

Madrid’s final destination for the match remains undecided.

Yet, European teams may see the reduced format’s advantage of playing one game lost if they must travel to distant locations like the Far East or West Coast for the clash.
