We’ve also picked out five players that we believe will be the ones to watch this season.

Kyle Reid

After graduating from the very well regarded West Ham United youth academy Kyle Reid found himself farmed out on loan for much of his early career, only making three appearances for ‘The Hammers’. In search of first team football Reid completed a move to Sheffield United, rejecting a new contract at West Ham, but once again he found himself on the bench, making just 7 appearances for ‘The Blades’ and in January he was on the move again, on loan to Charlton Athletic. Immediately this move paid off, after being put into the Charlton first team his confidence grew and as a player he developed. Scoring his first goal for the club against Yeovil Town he went on to make 17 appearances for the London based club. By the end of his loan spell Reid had become a fans favourite at the Valley for his exciting tricks and blistering pace and immediately Phil Parkinson, the Charlton manager, set about making his move permanent. This transfer was completed, under the nose of a number of Championship clubs, and Parkinson, and Charlton, had their man. He is likely to be a key player for Charlton this season and with the ability to turn a game in one run, or piece of skill, he may just provide the quality Charlton need to fire them up the table.

Rickie Lambert

The Southampton striker is simply deadly at this level and may be the most feared striker in the whole division. After a slow start to his career at Blackpool, Macclesfield and Stockport Lambert made a move to Rochdale. It was at ‘The Dale’ he started to show his potential and after 62 games for the club teams from a higher level were beginning to take note of Lambert’s obvious ability. In the end he opted for a move to Bristol Rovers and it was here that he really began to make a name for himself. After 128 appearances and 51 goals for ‘The Gasheads’ he moved to Southampton for a seven figure sum. In his first season at Southampton, surrounded by higher quality players, he immediately proved he was worth the big transfer fee paid for him scoring 31 goals and being the top goalscorer in all four English league divisions – the second time in succession he has won this award. He will look to continue this sort of form in to the 2010-2011 season and fire Southampton to an expected promotion to the Championship.

Anthony Wordsworth

In what was a fairly average season for Colchester United fans last campaign one player really shone; Anthony Wordsworth. After starting his career at Colchester in 2006 he struggled to break into the first team for his first two years at the club making only a handful of starts. He did begin to get some regular first team appearances though in 2008-2009 season, 30 in total although 21 of these were off the bench and began to show his potential to fans at the newly built Weston Homes Community Stadium. Last season he became a first team regular and excelled scoring ten goals from the left hand side and the centre of midfield. A naturally gifted footballer, he is a free-kick specialist and his goal-scoring ability is evident. This ability to score from midfield may be crucial this season for Colchester as they desperately lack quality up-front.

null

Grant McCann

I could hardly make it through this article without mentioning a Peterborough player could I? Grant McCann came to ‘The Posh’ from Scunthorpe this summer and immediately the London Road faithful were excited by the addition. Another product of the West Ham United academy, he was regularly loaned out at the start of his career to gain invaluable match experience. However, after two successive loan moves to Cheltenham Town the Northern Irish midfielder began to find a home for himself and made the move to ‘The Robins’ permanent in the summer of 2003. He immediately became a regular in the Cheltenham side and made over 200 appearances for the club in his time there. A move to Barnsley came about with his increased reputation but it didn’t work out for McCann and just a season after joining Barnsley he left in favour of Scunthorpe. He would go on to play in 99 games for Scunthorpe scoring 33 goals in the process and the midfielder became a regular for his national side, Northern Ireland, with this impressive form. McCann is a naturally able football player, he always seems to be in space when in possession, and he rarely misplaces a pass. This ability to be a deep-lying play maker in Peterborough’s midfield added to the fact he is a dead-ball specialist should mean McCann finishes the season with plenty of assists and a high goal tally.

Jordan Rhodes

At the age of 20 Jordan Rhodes is one of the brightest prospects in the lower leagues. The striker began his career at Ipswich Town where he was given the opportunity to go out on loan to a number of lower league clubs to develop his skills and play on a more regular basis. Rhodes’ most fruitful loan spell came at Brentford. At the age of 18 he became a regular first team player for ‘The Bees’ and scored 7 goals for the club in just 14 games although his time at the club was cut short due to injury. Back at Ipswich Rhodes started to be involved with the first team and netted his first goal for the club against Cardiff in a 2-2 draw. However, Roy Keane opted to sell Rhodes, to the disappointment of many Ipswich fans, to an ambitious Huddersfield side. In his first season at League One level Rhodes immediately looked comfortable and scored 6 goals in his first 6 games for the club. Later in the season his goal-scoring was less frequent but Rhodes managed to net 19 goals in his first season of regular first team football. After becoming more experienced as a player and developing further Jordan Rhodes will look to improve on his goal-scoring record for ‘The Terriers’ and be the main man in their promotion push this season.
