Florian Wirtz Back in German Good Books as Media React to ‘Magical’ Liverpool Star vs Slovakia

Florian Wirtz of Liverpool in action for Germany

Florian Wirtz arrived at Liverpool earlier this summer with the hype through the roof for the German playmaker.

The 22-year-old was a mega money signing at Anfield – costing as much as £116million – and was expected to tear up the Premier League as soon as he made his first outing for the club.

Since his competitive debut for the Reds outside of the Community Shield – Wirtz faced Bournemouth in his first league outing – fans have been waiting for the playmaker to really click into gear as a Liverpool star.

The club have seriously underperformed this season so far with even top talent Mo Salah coming in for criticism.

The Egyptian’s stats have dipped and there have been some sections of the support urging manager Arne Slot to drop the 33-year-old for a longer period of time as he has struggled to find his own form.

Wirtz is in the same boat as Salah, but only with his club, it seems.

German media react to Florian Wirtz vs Slovakia

On the international stage, the German has shone and he proved himself again in World Cup qualifying as his rampant Germany side destroyed Slovakia to qualify for the competition in 2026.

Wirtz put on a clinic as Germany won 6-0 and the creative chipped in with two assists for former Manchester City star Leroy Sané.

The attacker also put a number of other opportunities on a plate for his teammates as he created six scoring chances that were not taken on the night.

It could have been an even more significant scoreline had they been tucked away, but Wirtz showed the sort of form that convinced Liverpool to spend big on him in the first place.

The German media were delighted to have their star man back in the thick of the action and he produced what they expected.

And there was a sense of pride that he did the business for them even in the midst of a difficult club campaign.

We at FootballBlog highlighted some praise Wirtz received from the media in Germany as they took great joy in welcoming back their talisman.

BILD

“Just like Sane, he (Wirtz) had a few misjudged passes at the start.

“But then that dream pass before the 3-0 – that was finally the old Leverkusen Wirtz again! A magical move! And because it worked so well, the two of them did it again a few minutes later.”

90 Plus

“The Liverpool star’s current crisis at the club was evident; he didn’t initially exude much confidence.

“However, he improved steadily and played a crucial role in the 4-0 halftime lead with two excellent assists for Sane (36th, 41st minute). He was hard-working defensively and deserved a goal of his own.”

Suddeutsche Zeitung

“Good to see you again, Mr. Wirtz, we’ve missed you!

“For weeks it wasn’t even clear whether it was Florian Wirtz or a bewildered doppelganger on the pitch in Liverpool and the national team.

“In Leipzig, the original was back: technique, turns, crosses, passes, two beautiful assists before Leroy Sane’s goals – everything was back to normal, just like the player who cost a fortune this summer.

“He even provided arguments for being named Man of the Match without scoring himself. If Julian Nagelsmann wants to achieve his goal (the title) at the World Cup, he needs exactly this Wirtz.”

Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung

“For Wirtz, struggling at Liverpool, and Sane, returning to the German national team, this half-time match was balm for the soul after many debates in recent weeks.”
