Football Nicknames

Since I’m completely bored and have nothing to do tonight, here is a little something to ponder.

Football nicknames can be anything from the sublime to quite frankly, ridiculous.

One of the most loved ways of forming a nickname is to add a ‘y’ to the surname, as shown by the nicknames of Ryan Giggs – ‘Giggsy’, Paul Scholes – ‘Scholesy’, and Richard Dunne – ‘Dunney’, to name but a few.

Another popular method is to take the first syllable of the surname and add the letter ‘s’, e.g. Frank Lampard – ‘Lamps’ and David Beckham – ‘Becks’.

A third method is to simply take the initials of the player, an method displayed with John Terry – ‘JT’ and Andy Johnson – ‘AJ’.

The shortening of the surname is yet another popular choice, i.e Jamie Carragher – ‘Carra’ and Michael Johnson – ‘Johno’.

Also, everyone called Smith turns into Smudge, for instance, Alan Smith – ‘Smudge’.

Finally, and the most amusing way of forming football nicknames, is a play on words. This skill can be difficult for footballers, who have a limited amount of brain cells. So, here are my top five football nicknames

5) Diomansy Kamara – Called ‘Joe’ by his Fulham teammates because it’s easier to say than ‘Diomansy’ – a bit weird, but as I already said, I’m bored

4) Neil Pointon – The former Manchester City and Everton defender was dubbed ‘Dissa’ by colleagues. Think about it

3) Kiki Musampa, the ex-City Man City midfielder was regularly called ‘Chris’ by friends. ‘Chris Musampa’ – quality!!

2) This is a nickname that I heard for only the first time today, but I think it’s brilliant, so well done I*T*P*L. Stoke midfielder Tom Soares has been dubbed ‘Arto’. Don’t worry, I didn’t get it at first either. But when you think about it, ‘Tom Arto Soares’ is just sensational

Here we go, I’m sure you can’t wait for the best football nickname to be revealed………….

1) QPR defender Fitz Hall has been given the legendary nickname of ‘One Size’. ‘One Size Fitz Hall’!!!!!!!

See if you can come up with any better ones.
