Gannon To Leave The Posh At The End Of The Season.

Earlier today Jim Gannon announced that he would not be staying on at Peterborough United after his contract runs out at the end of the season (http://www.theposh.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10427~2003671,00.html).

Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough’s chairman, has made his intentions known about his desire to keep Gannon at the helm after his short term contract expires but Gannon rejected the offer for “personal reasons” rather than footballing ones.

The news comes as another disappointing moment in what has been a turgid season for Posh fans, after already seeing two managers leave the club, for different reasons, on ‘mutual consent’ and with the team currently bottom of the Championship, looking doomed. Add this to the fact that many of the major stars of Posh’s back-to-back promotion squad all looking set to leave this summer, George Boyd is at Nottingham Forest on loan and Aaron McLean has expressed his desire to leave London Road, means it has been a season to forget for Peterborough United supporters.

Gannon came to the club and promised to bring some “pride and credibility” back to The Posh. His record is also fairly impressive, after winning 4 of his 11 games in charge so far, earning Posh their first consecutive wins of the season and their first victory on the road. His ‘footballing principles’ and the way he works with officials inside the club means the ex Stockport County player and manager has endeared himself to the fans and MacAnthony, with both parties desperate for Gannon to sign a new contract.

With Gannon leaving the club, not immediately but at the end of the season, MacAnthony will have to make his mind up as to whether he wishes to appoint a new manager that wants to be at the club next season, most likely in League 1, immediately so he has time to gauge what he wants in the summer transfer window and know the strengths of his current squad or keep Gannon in charge until the campaign is up to ensure that the club maintains some stability.

Gary Johnson, the former Bristol City manager, seems to be the favourite with the fans to be appointed by the club. Other managers being rumoured with the job are Alan Curbishly, Dean Holdsworth and Steve Cotterill although questions marks hang over whether any of these higher profile managers would want a job at League 1 level.

The Posh seem to be on a rollercoaster ride in recent times after achieving back-to-back promotions and relegation back to League 1, in their first season in the Championship since 1994, almost a certainty, life is never easy as a Peterborough fan and it appears that the club are now on the descent from the heights they had climbed to. However with the ever ambitious MacAnthony stating that he “wants the League 1 title if we do go down”  Posh fans better be strapped in tightly as it is a certainty that the ride hasn’t finished yet.

What’s your opinion on Gannon’s decision? Do you think he has let the club down? Who should be his replacement? Who is at fault for this disastrous season? Please comment below.
