Gary Neville has accused Jamie Carragher of “disrespect” towards Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim.
The Sky Sports punditry pair are often at each others throats as they debate everything Premier League on a daily basis for the broadcaster.
Neville as a former United star and Carra as an ex-Liverpool defender are natural opposites having played for either side of the rivalry divide throughout their playing careers.
As is tradition, they were asked for Sky’s Monday Night Football predictions at the beginning of the campaign to make claims as to which clubs will win the title, be relegated and which players will win the big personal gongs come May 2026.
But they were also this season asked to name their manager to watch closely and, as expected, neither could agree.
Gary Neville says Ruben Amorim manager to watch this season
Reds legend Carragher tipped Austrian gaffer Oliver Glasner and his Crystal Palace side as an outfit to monitor this year following last term’s FA Cup win and their penalty shootout over Liverpool in the Community Shield Final.
Perhaps predictably, Neville plumped for Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, and that drew a laugh from Carra beside him on the couch.
Clearly the reaction irked Neville and he snapped: “Why you laughing?”
Carragher then replied: “You pick the Man United manager every year on that,” to which Neville hit back: “I don’t pick them every year, it’s disrespectful.”
After reminding his sparring partner that he opted for Erik ten Haag last season, Neville explained his reasons behind picking the Dutchman back then and Amorim now.
Jamie Carragher laughed at Neville’s backing
“The reason last year was a similar reason to this. Ten Hag last year because I knew if he started badly, he’d be under massive pressure. Similarly, there’s probably going to be no in between here,” he added.
“Ruben Amorim, if he starts off badly and they’re in 13th, 14th in October, November, he’s going to be under massive pressure. He’s the Manchester United manager, he has to deliver in these first few months of the season and I think he will outperform.
“I know you’re not sure about him and you sort of wrote your article the other day saying that you think he’s not that good.”
How Manchester United and Crystal Palace began Premier League season
Carragher’s pick, Glasner, guided his Eagles to an opening day goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It could have been more had Tottenham target Eberechi Eze‘s free-kick goal not controversially been ruled out.
United started their season with a defeat at home to Arsenal after Riccardo Calafiori nodded home the winner from a goalkeeping error.
Amorim was forced to defend Altay Bayındır for his role in the goal after journalists questioned the manager’s call to play the Turk over Andre Onana and Tom Heaton.
The boss was visibly bewildered by the line of questioning but did explain how he did NOT drop Onana who hadn’t trained, and would always pick Bayındır over Heaton based on previous results and performances.
