Welcome Georgie!

Honduras striker Georgie Welcome will join Rangers on trial next week, but manager Walter Smith revealed he will not be able to play in next week’s friendlies with Clyde and Newcastle due to work permit regulations.

The 25-year-old has 17 caps for Honduras, including appearances in the 2010 World Cup, scoring three goals. His goal record at club level with 23 goals in 64 games for Montagua and previously scoring 18 goals for Arsenal in 22 games, not the English Arsenal of course.

Assistant manager Ally McCoist was impressed by Welcome in the World Cup and manager Smith wants to have a look at the powerful striker for himself. He told the Rangers website: “Georgie Welcome will be coming to join us next week on trial. We can’t play him in the games because of the work permit situation but we can look at him training, We will see what happens and then take it from there.”

Trialist Welcome told a Honduras website: “Ramon Maradiaga [Motagua coach] told me to strive and take advantage of this great opportunity. I am going to give everything because he wants to see me succeed abroad and not return to Motagua. I am going to die on that pitch because it is my chance. I trust that Jesus will help me in my new experience. I have waited a long time for this moment and I will fight to fulfil my dream.”
