Having finished top of a group consisting of Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras and Mexico it was clinically impossible for USA not to qualify. This will be their sixth world cup finals appearance in succession and with having players from the Premier League and the Bundesliga they could well be able to go far in this competition. Furthermore they came close to winning the confederations cup after beating Spain and just missing out 3-2 to the eventual champions Brazil in the final. This should be a team to be extremely worried about.
Unites States Key Players
Everton’s Tim Howard will be their first choice this summer. Having been undermined at Manchester United he finally got the move, and the first choice spot that he unreservedly deserves which is at Everton. In the 2009 confederations cup he was awarded the Golden Glove award for the best keeper in the tournament. Bearing in mind his side came up against sides like Brazil and Spain so this certainly no mean feet by him. Overall he is a fantastic goalkeeper for club and country and certainly shouldn’t be underestimated about his qualities. Not to forget the backup from Villa’s Brad Guzan and Wolves’s Marcus Hahnemann so in the goalkeeping department their not that bad off. Unlike England as proved by my squad choice soon.
In their defence they have Oguchi Onyewu who is AC Milan’s centre back and used to play for Newcastle, which means that because of the difference between the sides hierachical differences he took the biggest leap in world football, apart from of course when ever the Portugese prima donna Ronaldo decides to fall over when the faintest flush of air touches his pretty little manicured skin. Carlos Bocanegra aswell who is full of expirence and is well known to english fans after his 4 year spell at the quieter West London team in Fulham. Jonothan Spector from West Ham features for the Yanks who is a very competent defender. So the USA just like their goalkeeping department have depth and quality in abundance which means you will expect them not to be giving goals away cheaply.
Despite having good players in their midfield it lacks the desired depth of their previous decisions DaMarcus Beasely who currently plays for Rangers, who has potential but doesn’t bring it to fruition enough. There is clearly quality inside him but does he have the sparkle that all great players have? With him playing in the diminished past time that is the SPL that answer is probably no. Fulham’s Clint Dempsey is a brilliant player and proves that every week in the Premier League. Also outstanding prospect and former Manchester United trialist Freddy Adu will undoubtebly be in the squad. These players will ensure that the USA will be a hard team to get through and defend against when these sides meet in Rustenburg on the 12th June at 20:30.
Their attack will be lead by their all time record cap holder, goals scorer, assist record holder and captain Landon Donovan. He had a loan spell this year for Bayern Munich and there are rumours speculating that he may join Everton in the months leading up to the World Cup as the MLS is in an off season. He will certainly pose every team problems with his attacking prowess. Furthermore Houston Dynamo’s Brain Ching will be Donovan’s foil with Fulham’s Eddie Johnson as backup who bearing in mind has yet to have scored a goal for Fulham despite having only played 7 games for them, therefore at this precise moment in time no one can expect too much from him. Despite all of this he has scored 12 goals for his country in 39 appearances, with most notably scoring a goal against Argentina in the Copa America in 2007.
After concluding everything all together I believe that USA will be the most dangerous team in the Group apart from England. There is evidence to show that they are capable of performing on the big stage after defeating Spain and coming close to replicating that against Brazil. `Soccer` is without a doubt not America’s national sport, with American Football; Baseball, Basketball and Ice Hockey among others setting the agenda, but still our game of football is big enough for it to encroach on an American’s daily happenings. I predict a 2nd place finish in the group for them.
