Real Madrid legend Guti has sent a warning to Alvaro Arbeloa as he begins life as the top boss in the Spanish capital.
The former midfielder believes Arbeloa has a massive task ahead of him, as mid-season managerial changes rarely work.
Xabi Alonso lost his job shortly after Los Blancos’ defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final on Sunday night. Real Madrid will save millions in Alonso’s compensation fees because he was with the club for less than a year.
Arbeloa has come on as his replacement, but potentially only in a caretaker capacity. Reports suggest Los Merengues could look to appoint a more experienced coach in the summer transfer window.
Guti Warns Alvaro Arbeloa About Real Madrid Stint
Arbeloa begins his Real Madrid stint with a relatively straightforward Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash with Albacete on Wednesday night.
Ahead of his managerial debut with a first-division team, Guti openly discussed Arbeloa’s chances of success.
He told DAZN:
“I’m certain that mid-season coaching changes don’t usually work .
“It’s true that it worked when Zidane came, but never in my playing days. I think it’s very difficult to come in mid-season, with a chaotic dressing room and many injuries”
Real Madrid need to understand that Álvaro Arbeloa cannot bring or rebuild anything that Xabi Alonso could not. Real Madrid cannot afford to be coached by an inexperienced manager. The club is built on elite standards, not managerial apprenticeships. Even Zinedine Zidane did not…

Guti also shared his thoughts on Alonso’s departure. The former midfielder believes dressing room chaos contributed to the Spaniard’s mid-season exit.
Guti added:
“I haven’t experienced the day-to-day atmosphere in the dressing room with Xabi, but it’s true that you can tell when the dressing room isn’t comfortable or happy with the coach.
“I think this was the trigger for Xabi’s departure.”
Arbeloa Is Likely to Focus More on Managing than Coaching
Arbeloa knows the challenge at Real Madrid and says he is only focused on winning. And to do so, he must learn from Alonso’s mistakes.
Alonso wanted to coach Madrid, make them as tactically sound as possible. However, that approach has rarely worked at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Alonso leaned heavily on data, conducted lengthy sessions breaking down tactics. Reports suggest most of the players did not take to his approach.
Additionally, he reportedly fell through with Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo after restricting their minutes. Unrest grew in the dressing room, and that reflected on the pitch.
Everything you need to know about Real Madrid’s new coach: Álvaro Arbeloa
• Real Madrid legend — 238 games for the club
• 2× Champions League winner
• World Cup (2010) + Euro (2008, 2012) winner with Spain

Arbeloa has primarily been appointed because he knows the club inside and out. In addition to tactics, he is well aware of the importance of managing the egos of the players.
In his first press conference, he stated his desire for Vinicius Jr., a key figure in the dressing room, to enjoy his football. This signals his likely priorities in the coming months.
Now, if he can get his tactics right, it would not be surprising to see him securing a long-term deal at the end of the season.
