Harry Kane on Course to Break Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga Record

It was during the 2020/21 campaign that Robert Lewandowski rewrote Bundesliga history, scoring a record 41 goals in a single top-flight season for Bayern Munich.

Is that extraordinary benchmark now under serious threat from Bayern’s current goal machine, Harry Kane?

Harry Kane miles ahead in Golden Boot race

Since joining Bayern Munich from Tottenham for £83.3 million in August 2023, the club’s record signing has been nothing short of sensational.

Kane has made 120 appearances across all competitions, scoring an astonishing 114 goals while also registering 29 assists.

After netting 36 Bundesliga goals in 32 matches to win the Golden Boot in his first season in Germany (2023/24), the England captain followed that up with 26 goals in 31 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.

The three-peat now looks firmly within reach. Kane has already scored 18 league goals in just 14 matches this season.

Putting Kane’s dominance into perspective, his nearest challengers in the Golden Boot race are already 10 goals behind.

Jonathan Burkardt and Deniz Undav are currently joint-second in the scoring charts with eight goals apiece.

Kane’s goals fire Bayern to top of the table

Kane’s prolific form has translated directly into Bayern’s commanding position at the top of the Bundesliga.

The defending champions sit nine points clear of nearest challengers RB Leipzig, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by basement side Mainz at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Bayern actually required an 87th-minute Kane penalty to avoid suffering their first league defeat of the season.

It is not solely Kane carrying the attacking load. Summer signing Luis Díaz has also made a major impact, contributing 10 attacking returns (seven goals, three assists).

With contributions coming from multiple sources, Vincent Kompany’s side already look well placed to retain their Bundesliga crown.

Golden Boots are nothing new to Kane

Kane’s scoring pedigree stretches well beyond Germany.

During his time at Tottenham Hotspur, he won the Premier League Golden Boot three times — in 2015/16 (25 goals), 2016/17 (29) and 2020/21 (23).

He also claimed the Bundesliga Golden Boot in his first season in Germany, with 36 goals in 32 matches.

For context, the 2022/23 Bundesliga Golden Boot was shared by Niclas Füllkrug and Christopher Nkunku with just 16 goals.

Remarkably, Kane has already scored three Bundesliga hat-tricks this season — against Leipzig, Hoffenheim and Stuttgart.

That level of form suggests that Kane could even enter the Ballon d’Or conversation for 2026 if he maintains his output.

Success has followed Kane at international level too. The Bayern striker is England’s all-time leading goalscorer with 78 goals in 112 appearances.

Lewandowski’s record seriously in doubt

Lewandowski won the Bundesliga Golden Boot an unparalleled seven times across spells with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

However, Kane is now threatening his record for most goals in a single Bundesliga season.

Kane is currently averaging 1.29 goals per game in the league. If he maintains that rate and features in Bayern’s remaining 20 fixtures, he would finish the campaign with 43 goals — two more than Lewandowski’s record.

Should Kane continue scoring at anything close to his current pace between now and May, Lewandowski’s once-unthinkable record may finally be surpassed.
