Houllier needs time at Aston Villa

Villa Park has become a waste ground of pessimism in recent times. Gabriel Agbonlahor fails to score and the crowd get on his back. Villa go in at half-time behind and the fans boo them off the pitch. With a new manager and the Villains very much going through a transitional period it is vital that Gerard Houllier is given the time he needs in reshaping this football club.

Despite the recent disappointing results, I still thoroughly believe big things can be expected of Villa in the next two years. Marc Albrighton and Barry Bannan are the starlets among a crop of promising youngsters coming through the club and you can add Ciaran Clark to that list after his brace and impressive performance against the Gunners today.

As reiterated before, it’s very much a transitional period at the moment. Martin O’Neill left at the worst possible time as we are all heavily aware and it was always going to be a tough job for his successor. But forget O’Neill now, he spat his dummy out and went. Time to move on.

I firmly believe once the young Villains have a season under their belt and Houllier puts his personal touch on the club with a few clever signings, we’ll be back next season pushing for that top 4 spot we deserve, perhaps this time with more bite and conviction. Despite the repeated claims that our squad is too small to compete properly it almost feels as if we’ve made four or five new signings this season with Marc Albrighton, Barry Bannan, John Hogg and Ciaran Clark all featuring heavily in recent games and might I add doing a greatjob.

To anyone who missed the game yesterday watch the football highlights later on and it’s fair to say we were outplayed by Arsenal but this is at the moment irrelevant. The current injury crisis at Villa Park is the worst I’ve known for a long while and it’s true to say we’d probably be about six places higher if Stilian Petrov and Agbonlahor weren’t on the sidelines.

I guess what I’m trying to say to you Villa fans far and wide is to give Houllier all your support. I realise there are plenty of supporters out there who will already be with me on this one but to the few pockets of fans already starting to get restless over our poor start to the season, HAVE FAITH. We’re a great club with a proven manager and exciting young players already making their mark in the Premier League. We will be back where we belong, it just takes time!
