How Tottenham’s signings can make the difference towards the end of the season

The  summer 2013 transfer window was certainly a busy and exciting one for anyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur Football club, as spurs looked set to dominate the funds of the sale of Gareth Bale who made his world record move to Real Madrid for £85.3 million pounds which spurs did not fail to disapoint in bringing ‘the next generation’ of players which could see the Lillywhite’s challenging for the much needing UEFA Champions League and in a fews years being genuine ‘Title contenders’.

As for losing a key player in Gareth Bale’s calibre spurs main men of Franco Baldini, Chairman Daniel Levy and Andre Villas Boas quickly invested in seven high quality players such as Spain International Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen of Ajax, Vlad Chiriches, Etienne Capoue, Belgian midfielder Nacer chadli, midfield dynamite Paulinho and young Argentine sensation Erik Lamela who became the club record signing for £30 million pounds from AS Roma. In total Tottenham spent and staggering £110 million after the investment of Gareth bale’s transfer, you could debate the squad was made stronger with the upcoming season with immense potential. However things did not go accordingly to plan so much for AVB’s men as Roberto Soldado was struggling for form which the majority of his goals came from the penalty spot meanwhile Erik Lamela was struggling to settle as he is still trying to nail the language barrier and players such as Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue had failed to make and impact.

Things soon went from bad to worse for Tottenham even though they maintained there 100% winning record in the Europa League by winning 6/6, form in the domestic league was inconsistent and the results such as the 6-0 and 5-0 embarrassment to Man City and Liverpool respectively rusulted in AVB collecting his P45 and costing his job.

Meanwhile the appointment of under 21’s manager Tim Sherwood taken the reigns at White Hart Lane on a 18 month contract has changed Spurs’ fortunes around by being unbeaten in five Premier League games and maintaining amongst the big guns around the Champions League and the top of the league. With recent speculation of players such as Erik Lamela, Lewis Holtby and Nacer Chadli reportedly seeking a move away from White Hart Lane. While Tim Sherwood has came out and rejected claims such as Lamela leaving and confidently saying how he has huge potential and looks to exploit it while recovering from fatigue in one of his thighs, this suggests the confidence has in his young players as players such as Nabil Bentaleb who Sherwood has nurtured through the youth system gives us a sign of how well this young spurs team can move towards consistency and success coming to the later stages of the season.

With the depth of the Spurs squad I see no reason why they can challenge for the Europa league and the UEFA Champions League as this team has quality players through the first team regulars and the youth team waiting on the wings to give Tim Sherwood a selection dilemma prior to Bentaleb and Harry Kane to name a few. As Tottenham look to build on last weeks success of Crystal Palace then face a trip to Wales to take on Michael Laudrup’s Swansea side. Meanwhile Tim Sherwood has been coy of recent speculation of bringing in a striker after the confirmation of Jermain Defoe becoming Toronto bound, which he will join come the end of February; leaving just Roberto Soldado, Emmanuel Adebayor and young hot prospect Harry Kane. This will be crucial towards the later stages of the season as towards the top end of the table as the more strength in depth the better as it could be what gives spurs the advantage from last season and finishing in the top 4. One thing spurs fans are crying out for is a run of games for the £30 million club record signing Erik Lamela. The young Argentine amongst other of the seven lilywhite’s signings have not had a consistent run in the first team, which with the World Cup in Brazil around the corner a run of form is much needed for players such as Lamela in which he is more than capable of. Many of the spurs’s signings have found life in England and the Premier League challenging, but sooner or later I really believe in which Tim Sherwood believes that Lamela and Chadli can be the difference for spurs as the potential of this young squad is quite simply incredible.

A run of games is really what Lamela etc needs after returning from fatigue in one of his thighs could be the difference maker towards success or failure in the second half of next season. The winter transfer market will be a quiet one for Tottenham but with some of the young talent mixed with experience will benefit spurs and a bit more consistency from Sherwood’s men could lead to success in the near future.
