Ibrahim Mbaye: The PSG wonderkid on Aston Villa’s summer radar

The summer transfer window might still be on the horizon, but the rumour mill at Villa Park is already in overdrive.

The latest name linked with a move to B6 is Paris Saint-Germain’s teenage sensation, Ibrahim Mbaye.

According to recent reports from Sky Sports, Unai Emery and the Aston Villa recruitment team are keeping a very close eye on the 18-year-old winger.

Mbaye is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents currently coming out of the famed PSG academy, and his potential availability has alerted several Premier League heavyweights.

Who is Ibrahim Mbaye?

For those who haven’t been keeping tabs on Ligue 1 youth prospects, Ibrahim Mbaye is a name you’ll likely be hearing much more often.

Breaking into the PSG first team in 2024, he actually eclipsed Warren Zaïre-Emery’s record to become the youngest-ever player to start a match for the Parisian giants.

This season, he has been a semi-regular fixture in the matchday squad, clocking up 26 appearances across all competitions.

While he has only started 10 of those games, his output — including a goal and a brace of assists — has shown glimpses of a player who is ready for the next step.

His international pedigree is also growing; he was a member of the Senegal squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring six times and proving he can handle the pressure of the big stage.

Why Aston Villa want Ibrahim Mbaye

It’s no secret that Unai Emery is looking to freshen up his attacking options.

With Ollie Watkins form dipping this season and questions lingering over the long-term futures of Jadon Sancho and Donyell Malen, Villa need more spark in the final third.

Mbaye offers versatility, pace, and that “X-factor” that Emery loves in his wide players.

However, securing his signature won’t be easy. PSG have the youngster under contract until 2028 and aren’t exactly in a rush to sell.

If Villa are to land their man, Champions League qualification could be the ultimate bargaining chip to convince the player that Birmingham is the right place for his development.

A costly pursuit for Aston Villa?

While the interest is genuine, the financial side of the deal could be the sticking point.

PSG are notoriously tough negotiators, and given Mbaye’s “wonderkid” status, he won’t come cheap.

Villa showed their ambition in January by bringing in Tammy Abraham from Besiktas, but the search for a consistent, high-ceiling attacker remains a priority.

If Mbaye feels his path to the PSG first team is blocked by the likes of Ousmane Dembélé or Bradley Barcola, a move to the Premier League might be too tempting to turn down.

Whether Villa can fend off the inevitable competition from other top-flight clubs remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure: Ibrahim Mbaye is a talent that fits the “Emery profile” perfectly. Keep your eyes on this one as we head into the business end of the season.
