PSG Handed Major Champions League Boost Ahead of Huge Liverpool Clash

Paris Saint-Germain have been granted a significant advantage ahead of their upcoming Champions League quarter-final showdown with Liverpool.

In a move that has sparked controversy in France, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has officially confirmed that PSG’s domestic fixture against RC Lens has been postponed.

The match, which was originally sandwiched directly between the two legs of the European tie against the Reds, will now be moved to a later date.

The decision comes after a week of intense debate and a formal request from the French champions to have their schedule cleared to aid their European ambitions.

A Massive Advantage for the Parisians

The postponement means that while Liverpool face a grueling schedule, Luis Enrique’s side will have a clear week to prepare for the return leg at Anfield.

Liverpool are currently scheduled to face Fulham in the Premier League on April 11 — the same day PSG were supposed to travel to Lens.

Instead, the French giants will now be able to rest their key stars and focus entirely on the tactical battle against Arne Slot’s men.

This isn’t the first time the LFP has stepped in to help their clubs in Europe.

A similar request was granted earlier this season during PSG’s tie against Chelsea, a move the club claims “benefits French football as a whole” as they look to climb the UEFA coefficient rankings.

Fury from RC Lens on PSG postponement

While PSG celebrate the extra rest, the news has not gone down well at RC Lens.

The club released a spiky statement earlier this week, slamming the decision to relegate the French league to the “status of an adjustment variable.”

Lens argued that changing the date at such short notice creates an unfair sporting environment, depriving them of competition for 15 days before forcing them into a congested fixture list later in the month.

“It would appear that a troubling sentiment is taking hold,” the statement read, suggesting that the “imperatives of some” are being placed above the integrity of the domestic championship.

PSG vs Liverpool: The Rematch

This quarter-final serves as a massive grudge match for Liverpool.

The Reds will be seeking revenge after being knocked out of the competition by PSG at the last-16 stage last season in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.

The first leg is set to take place at the Parc des Princes on April 8, with the decisive return leg at Anfield on April 14.

With PSG now heading into those games with fresh legs, Arne Slot will have to dig deep into his squad depth to ensure Liverpool aren’t outpaced by a well-rested Parisian side.
