Liverpool paid too much for Jeremy Jacquet.
That is the opinion of France legend Christophe Dugarry.
Jacquet rejected Chelsea in favour of a move to Anfield and will join Liverpool from Rennes in the summer after a deal was agreed last week.
The 20-year-old defender, who has 36 Ligue 1 appearances to his name, is expected to cost Liverpool at least £55 million — with the fee rising further once add-ons are included.
Christophe Dugarry questions Liverpool’s transfer fee for Jeremy Jacquet
Dugarry suggested in a recent interview with RMC Sport that the overall cost to Liverpool will be around €72m (£62m).
The former World Cup winner described Jacquet as a “good player” but claimed Liverpool paying such a high fee was evidence they were “losing their minds” in the transfer market.
Dugarry said: “This isn’t meant to offend the player. Honestly, he’s not to blame at all, and we wish him all the best because he’s a good player. When you have suckers like that, well done to Rennes.
“Rennes managed to find a sucker like Liverpool for €72m.”
As pointed out by Pep Guardiola earlier this week, Liverpool are one of six Premier League clubs with a higher net transfer spend than Manchester City over the past five years.
Will Jeremy Jacquet be a regular starter for Liverpool?
If Ibrahima Konate leaves Anfield this summer, Jacquet could instantly become a first-team regular.
Konate’s current contract expires in June, and his departure would open up a space for Jacquet to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
Should Konate sign a new deal, Jacquet may not be one of the first names on the team sheet next season. Even so, he would still be expected to see regular minutes as part of the rotation.
Either way, Liverpool are not spending this kind of money on a player they plan to park on the bench long-term.
Even if he begins as a rotational option, the expectation will be that Jacquet develops into a key figure over the next few seasons — and potentially a long-term successor to Van Dijk once the Dutchman eventually moves on.
Jeremy Jacquet “honoured” to sign for Liverpool
Speaking after agreeing his summer move to Anfield, Jacquet said he was “honoured” to be joining “one of the greatest football institutions in the world”.
However, he also stressed his determination to finish his Rennes career on a high.
He added: “It was also very important for me to finish my adventure in red and black on a high note, at the club I grew up with, the club that is so close to my heart.
“I am approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some wonderful emotions with my teammates and the fans.”
