More Than A Dozen Players Set To Miss Carabao Cup Semi Between Man City And Newcastle

manchester city newcastle injury news

Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg between Manchester City and Newcastle will see both teams affected by injury – with as many as 15 senior players possibly missing between the two sides.

Manchester City will take a two-goal lead back to the Etihad for tonight’s second leg after an impressive 2-0 victory at St. James’ Park.

Goals from new City signing Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki were enough for Pep Guardiola’s men.

But Newcastle are not out of it yet, and will throw everything at their hosts.

Eddie Howe’s side have not won at the Etihad since 2014, losing 17 of their last 18 visits.

And the Magpies will have to do without skipper Bruno Guimaraes, who also missed the weekend’s 4-1 loss at Liverpool.

More Than A Dozen Injury Concerns For Manchester City Vs Newcastle

Newcastle’s injury problems have devastated the squad this season, but City have problems of their own.

Defender Josko Gvardiol suffered a broken leg, while Ruben Dias has been out of action recently.

Pep Guardiola’s latest City injury update was positive about Dias, but revealed Rayan Cherki was now a doubt.

Eddie Howe, meanwhile, will be without at least five players for tonight’s fixture.

Between the two sides, there could be as many as 15 senior players unavailable for City and Newcastle.

Newcastle Injury News

Confirmed Out:

  • Fabain Schar
  • Emil Kraft
  • Tino Livramento
  • Joelinton
  • Bruno Guimaraes
  • Lewis Miley

Doubtful:

  • Sven Botman

Schar’s ankle injury, suffered against Leeds last month, will keep the defender out for some time.

No return date has been set for the Swiss international, but it appears to be a nasty one.

While less severe, Emil Kraft is also ruled out of Wednesday’s cup fixture.

Tino Livramento has been out with a hamstring problem, and is not expected back until March.

And Joelinton is also set for a lengthy spell on the sidelined with a groin issue.

Skipper Bruno Guimaraes is missing after the ankle injury he picked up against PSV, though the full extent of the problem is unknown.

Lewis Miley has a minor knock, with Howe ruling him out for the City game.

Sven Botman, meanwhile, was not risked against Liverpool at the weekend.

He could, however, be brought back in against City on Wednesday night.

  • John Stones
  • Mateo Kovacic
  • Savinho
  • Ruben Dias
  • Jeremy Doku

Doubtful:

Ineligible:

As for City, Gvardiol’s leg injury will keep him out for the forseeable.

Likewise, John Stones has been missing since early December with a thigh problem, and will also be unavailable tonight.

Mateo Kovacic has an ankle problem and is out, while Savinho is still recovering from a thigh problem suffered on New Year’s Day.

Ruben Dias is back in training after a hamstring issue he picked up against Chelsea.

He has not been ruled out for definite, but is not expected to feature in midweek.

Jeremy Doku is out, having not yet returned to training, and there are major doubts over Rayan Cherki after the French winger picked up a knock during Sunday’s draw with Tottenham.

And despite being fully fit, new signing Marc Guehi will not play for City in the EFL Cup this season.

That’s because he did not join City prior to the semi-final first leg, making him ineligible for his new team due to EFL competition rules.
