Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United exit plan shelved due to injury to teammate

Kobbie Mainoo may have to wait for his Manchester United exit following an injury to Bruno Fernandes.

United are short of options in midfield, making Mainoo far more important to Ruben Amorim’s plans than he was just weeks ago.

Why Kobbie Mainoo Wanted to Leave Manchester United

Minutes have been hard to come by for Mainoo this season.

The 20-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game this season and has logged just 221 minutes in the competition, a jarring drop-off for a player who started the Euro 2024 final for England only 17 months ago.

There was interest in the summer, among those circling for a loan move were Napoli, but Mainoo opted to stay at Old Trafford, believing he could play his way into Amorim’s plans.

That moment hasn’t come. A January loan could’ve offered him a reset in a late bid to make Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

Bruno Fernandes Injury Changes January Plans

Fernandes’ “soft tissue” injury, suffered in Sunday’s defeat to Aston Villa, has effectively closed the door on any realistic chance of Mainoo leaving next month.

United are yet to put a firm timeline on his return, but the expectation is that he will miss several weeks, ruling him out over the festive period and placing his involvement in the 17 January derby against Manchester City in doubt.

Amorim has repeatedly described Mainoo as a like-for-like alternative to Fernandes in the attacking midfield role.

And with the captain sidelined, United simply cannot afford to let one of their few creative midfielders leave, even temporarily.

How Long Will Bruno Fernandes Be Out For?

Fernandes’ injury record makes the situation even more disruptive. Since arriving at United in 2020, he has missed just three league matches through injury or illness and has averaged 53 games per season.

Losing him for an extended spell is unfamiliar territory and places extra strain on a squad already operating with limited depth.

The timing could hardly be worse, landing in the middle of a congested run of fixtures and exposing just how thin United are in central areas.

Mainoo Injury Adds to United’s Midfield Problems

Mainoo is not fully fit himself. He missed the Villa game with a calf issue that could keep him out for up to ten days, likely ruling him out of the Boxing Day trip to Newcastle.

It’s a relatively minor problem, but it further complicates matters for Amorim, who is juggling fitness concerns while trying to keep some coherence in midfield.

Manchester United Squad Depth Concerns

The wider picture isn’t exactly encouraging. Noussair Mazraoui, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are all away at the Africa Cup of Nations, further limiting Amorim’s options during an already demanding stretch.

Those absences make sanctioning any outgoing business difficult, particularly in midfield, where Fernandes’ injury has underlined how few natural replacements United have.

Ruben Amorim on January Transfers

Amorim has been clear that United will not panic in the January transfer window. The focus is on long-term recruitment rather than short-term fixes to plug gaps.

“The only thing we know is that we only would try to bring players that we think is going to be the future,” Amorim said. “It’s not going to be to save something in this moment, to cope with the losses of three players for AFCON.”

That suggests Mainoo’s immediate future is at Old Trafford, regardless of how much game time he gets.

Who Can Replace Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United?

With Fernandes out, Amorim must decide who takes on the more attacking midfield role against Newcastle.

Mason Mount is an option alongside Casemiro, who returns from suspension, while Mainoo could yet be pushed into the frame if his calf problem clears sooner than expected.

For Mainoo, it’s a frustrating turn. A loan move in January looked like the ideal solution, but Fernandes’ injury has closed that door.

Instead, he may have to wait it out at United, hoping that circumstance – rather than planning – finally delivers the opportunity he has been searching for.
