Kyle’s Goal Gives Rangers Record Championship

A 17th minute goal from Kyle Lafferty was enough for Rangers to seal their record 53rd League Championship this afternoon at Easter Road. Only 800 Rangers fans were in the ground today due to Hibs’ stadium development but they dominated the atmosphere and were the envy of many supporters who couldn’t make it to the game. Walter Smith went with Kyle Lafferty and Kenny Miller in attack, but Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra missed out through injury. For the Hibees, Sol Bamba was replaced by Paul Hanlon and Wotherspoon was pushed to a more advanced position in a 4-3-3.

Lafferty fired home an excellent finish to secure title glory

The Bears took a step towards the title when Kenny Miller’s flick on was met by the excellent Kyle Lafferty and the Northern Irish striker fired home an excellent finish across the goalkeeper and into the far corner. The next 73 minutes was torture for the fans watching on TV across the country as Rangers sat in deep and gave Hibs bags of possession, especially towards the end of the first half.

Rangers battled on but survived a scare when Anthony Stokes linked up well with David Wotherspoon and the Hibs youngster fired his shot wide of the post. Towards the end of the game, Hibs had more and more of the ball and Derek Riordan was denied a penalty after he claimed Steven Whittaker brought him down. The TV pictures clearly showed there was no contact, but Sky’s analyst Davie Provan seemed to think so. Riordan also had an excellent effort well saved from McGregor with a right-footed effort.

Walter Smith’s men held on, despite Kenny Miller’s goal chopped off wrongly for offside, and secured a 53rd League Championship after a fine season.

Glasgow Rangers Champions Ooooooo Ooooooo! 😀
