It’s only Non League but I like it Blog 2: Will the early season curse strike Newport County?

As you as league fans will know, how the league looks after a handful of games is hardly ever how it looks at the end; but in the Blue Square Premier could Newport be bucking that trend?

Much like their Welsh brothers Swansea, Newport County are holding a respective position in their table. Battling at the wrong end of the table last season and losing to York in the FA Trophy final seems to have spurred Newport County on for better times this season.

Though their 100% record in the Blue Square went this weekend against Welsh rivals Wrexham, Newport seem to have shown many reasons to think maybe their good start isn’t a flash in the pan.

Their first game of the season showed their intent, scoring four in their opening day, 7-goal thriller against Mansfield.

Finding their scoring boots also wasn’t a problem as shown in their second game by winning comfortably against Nuneaton 4-0.

Grit and determination was the theme in their third match, holding off Lincoln City, after scoring two early goals and coming out victors 2-1. Also coming from behind in their fourth, to win with a late goal from Ismail Yakubu away at Braintree showed they can never be classed as down and out.

The fifth game showed a bit of luck, it seems is also needed to be top of the league. Hereford United, their opposition on this occasion, had a chance of going ahead, but a missed a Harry Pell penalty cost United dearly as Newport took complete control of the game after that, with a 2-0 win.

Getting the first Manager award for Justin Edinburgh and player of the Month award for Aaron O`Connor, who`s scored 6 goals already this season, also has shown the achievement of just what the club is doing this season.

With all the advances County have made, only time will tell through the season if Newport will remain top of the pile or if their defeat to Wrexham showed they’ve hit the top too soon and that the early season curse has affected yet another early performing club.
