The board of Manchester United is very busy today, trying to wrap up the signing of a key player for Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2008/09 squad. The Red Devils, contrary to last summer, have not been active in the transfer market, having only signed youngster Davide Petrucci from Roma. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that a bid for a major transfer target has been launched on Wednesday, without mentioning the name of the player. However, he said that the player will improve his squad drastically and provide Manchester United the push they need to retain domestic and European glory.

The transfer target is presumably a striker to partner Rooney and Tevez, as injury-plagued Saha is likely to be on his way out, possibly to Roy Keane’s Sunderland. The names mentioned are Dimitar Berbatov, Roque Santa Cruz, Sergio Aguero and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Although Ferguson said that his transfer activity will be kept to a minimum, it seems that two players will be signed this summer, if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club as expected. His replacement may come in the form of Sebastian Giovinco from Juventus, known to be very similar to Cristiano Ronaldo. His contract dispute with La Vecchia Signora, which is trying to recover from its Calciopoli stumble, has alerted Fergie to move for the talented winger. Keep checking for more updates regarding the movements of Manchester United in the transfer market.
