To be hated by both Manchester clubs, could be considered an achievement. Or in Carlos Tevez’s case; a reminder to the world’s footballing followers that today’s footballers are spoilt, arrogant and completely managed by money.
But only a year ago Tevez, captain and lead goal scorer, adored by his fans and respected by all football players had it all on the football pitch. Of the pitch the spotlight focused on his unhappy family life with the pressure on Tevez to move for his family’s sake or concentrate on his city career it was predictable and expected for the walking time bomb of the Munich incident. I don’t condone his actions however, and his refusal to warm up for the pitch was an utter disgrace to the football world.
This month however, after a five month struggle, the number 32 shirt is expected to be back on the pitch after being invited by Mancini to join the squad battling for the Premier League title. He, probably following advice from his PA, released a justly apologetic statement to the British public, and will be appearing after his special training course to help him get back to premium fitness.
Why?! They say actions speak louder than words and Tevez’s actions clearly show an unreliable and arrogant personality that, unhappy with his team and his enormous pay check, thinks it’s acceptable to just refuse play letting his team down, and also his fans, the dedicated supporters and throwing away the inspiration he has given to his young fans.
It is again a reminder to the world that it is money vs. values in today’s football society; with footballers no longer playing for the sheer passion of the game, but for the weekly wage. With Tevez paying his fine by the FA and facing no further punishment we have to look at the FA, the UEFA, the way our football clubs are run and why Tevez didn’t face further consequences, but why would he? In an association run by money, Tevez’s acceptance of his fine was a sign to the FA that he could now be accepted back into the squad.
But can we, as football fans forgive Tevez? Many disappointed city fans now lack faith in the Argentina striker, abandoned at their time of need, losing 2-0 to Bayern Munich they all placed their hopes in the stars goal scoring ability. His refusal to even warm up broke the relationship and Tevez is going to have to work hard to build it up again. Oh but let’s not forget, key to all of this is that Tevez’s streak has been lost, replaced with the likes of Aguero, Balotelli and Dzeko, does Tevez even have a place in City’s squad anymore?
