Pep Guardiola Confirms Extent Of Double Injury Blow For Manchester City Ahead Of Brighton Clash

Manchester City injury news

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has provided an update on the weekend’s worrying injury news ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Brighton.

Pep Guardiola’s side host the Seagulls at the Etihad stadium in midweek, looking to bounce back after frustrating draws in recent weeks.

City were held by both Sunderland (0-0) and Chelsea (1-1) in their last two Premier League games.

Those results have left them six points adrift of Arsenal in the Premier League title race, and level with Aston Villa.

And Sunday’s draw with Chelsea also inflicted further damage, and leaves City worryingly short of defensive options.

Manchester City Injury News Leaves City Short At The Back

Injuries to defensive duo Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias have left Pep Guardiola with a serious headache.

Gvardiol suffered a fractured tibia, with the serious lower leg injury at risk of ending his season.

Dias, meanwhile, has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring problem.

With veteran defender John Stones also set to miss the next few games as he recovers from a thigh issue, City are very short defensively.

Discussing City’s injury crisis, Pep Guardiola admitted the situation was difficult.

“Everybody knows it. I think so,” he said.

“Players are available and others are not. [Ruben Dias injured his] hamstring [and will miss] between four and six weeks. Josko [Gvardiol] is out for a long time.

“[John Stones isn’t] ready for the next games Of course, he’s an important player for us for a long time and he was injured for a long time last season; this season looks the same.

“He’s trying a lot and trying everything, but he’s not fit.”

City’s injury crisis has led to increased interest in Marc Guehi, who they want to sign from Crystal Palace.

As it stands, City’s only available senior centre-backs are Nathan Ake and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Twenty-year-old Max Alleyne is another option, though he is yet to make a senior appearance after returning from a loan spell with Watford.

Can Manchester City Still Win The Premier League?

Recent results have certainly damaged City’s title challenge.

At the top end of the table, every point matters and ground lost to fellow challengers can be hard to make up.

Tonight’s clash with Brighton is therefore especially important, with no room for error.

But City have shown time and time again that they can never be discounted.

They have repeatedly ended the season strong, charging to the title from improbably far back.

Arsenal may be six points ahead, but the Gunners have crumbled under pressure in the latter stages previously.

Six points is far from an insurmountable gap, especially with the two sides still to play each other in April.

It won’t be easy for City, but history shows that Pep Guardiola’s men know how to win when it counts.
