Manchester United 2-3 Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur secured a historic victory at Old Trafford last weekend making it their first win in 23 years at Old Trafford. Spurs managed to last beat the Red Devils in 1989 but they ended the run with goals from Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen, Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey. This made it United’s second defeat of the season which left them four points behind league leaders Chelsea who beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

There were glimpses of the Southampton match as Jan Vertonghen strolled through the Manchester United defence to net his first goal for the club in less than two minutes. Thirty minutes later Gareth Bale dribbled from the left wing across the field to finish in the bottom right corner as Rio Ferdinand’s half-hearted challenge would have left Sir Alex Ferguson unimpressed. The score was a shock 2-0 to Spurs at half time.

A half time lashing from Sir Alex Ferguson lifted the fight in United’s attack. Wayne Rooney came on for Ryan Giggs in which he made an immediate impact as he slipped in a low cross for Nani to slot past Brad Friedel which made it 2-1. It only took 40 seconds after the goal for Spurs to get their third as Clint Dempsey slotted home his first for the club from a Lindegaard parry and then Shinji Kagawa scored again one minute later which made the score 2-3 to Spurs. A crazy run of goals saw three goals in just 140 seconds. Manchester United were unlucky to equalise as they dominated second half possession but Spurs managed to hold on to the onslaught to secure a famous victory.

United showed true fight in the second half as they resembled football taught by Sir Matt Busby. This was the first time this season that Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney gelled well together which raises the question of why Rooney did not start the match. United need to improve defensively if they want a positive result against Newcastle United at St. James Park next weekend.
