Manchester United Dealt January Transfer Blow As Midfield Target Signs Contract Extension

Manchester United transfer targets

Manchester United have been dealt a blow to their January transfer ambitions after midfield target Ayyoub Bouaddi signed a new contract at Ligue 1 side Lille.

It’s been a frustrating season for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester Untied side so far.

There have been green shoots and clear signs of improvement, with wins against Liverpool, Chelsea and high-flying Sunderland.

But almost every strong showing has been followed by the familiar disappointment of a lacklustre defeat.

A 3-0 battering away at Manchester City on derby day was perhaps the most wounding result.

And it remains abundantly clear that a key area of weakness is United’s midfield.

Casemiro has been Amorim’s best holding midfield option, but the 33-year-old Brazilian veteran is in the twilight of his career.

Casemiro has been excellent this season.

And academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo has fallen out of favour severely this season.

As a result, United have been keen to add depth and quality through the middle.

There have been a number of names circulated, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton linked to United, though a deal seems unlikely.

But it looks like they will no longer be signing one target they had been keenly pursuing ahead of the January window.

Manchester United Transfer Target Bouaddi Extends Contract

On Monday, French outfit LOSC Lille announced the contract extension of one of their top young stars.

Eighteen-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has signed a new deal with the Ligue 1 club, which runs until 2029.

Tying down the French under-21 international to a long-term deal is some coup for Lille.

Bouaddi has been courted by a number of top teams as well as United, including Premier League leaders Arsenal.

A gifted and technical young midfielder, the youngster’s passing range, vision and ball progression have been crucial to Lille this season.

He has already made 72 senior appearances for Lille, at just 18, including 14 in Ligue 1 this season.

Discussing the extension, Lille president Olivier Letang said: “The extension of Ayyoub’s contract is a very emotional moment for us, given the strong bond we share.

“First and foremost, it’s a deep and special human connection.

“Ayyoub is a crucial player in our squad.

“Through his values and talent, he embodies the excellence of LOSC’s youth academy, which shapes not only footballers but also men.”

The news of Bouaddi’s new contract is a major blow for Manchester United, who had been lining up a move for the young starlet.

While a future deal is far from impossible, it likely destroys any chance of an imminent transfer.

Manchester United’s Midfield Options Severely Limited

With Bouaddi no longer a realistic option for United, Ruben Amorim’s midfield options remain thin.

As mentioned, Casemiro is the most natural holding midfielder in the squad.

His calmness and balance have been vital to United’s improvement this season.

But his age profile means his days at the top level are numbered.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes can operate in a deeper role, but his lack of defensive contribution can leave United exposed.

On top of this, there are question marks over how to get the best out of him.

Fernandes is on course for legendary status at United, but has not always been best utilised.

Some feel Man United captain Bruno Fernandes is wasted in central midfield.

Although capable of playing in a double-pivot, many would argue this wastes his attacking ability.

Manuel Ugarte was signed to fill this role, but he has failed to adapt sufficiently to the Premier League.

The Uruguayan has been inconsistent and unreliable, dropping him down the pecking order.

And young Kobbie Mainoo appears as close to an exit as he is to the starting lineup.

He has struggled for game time under Amorim, and looks likely to depart Old Trafford sooner rather than later.

As a result, United are severely limited in terms of midfield options.

And with this latest news, they will need to search elsewhere to find a new arrival – for now at least.
