Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has discussed the “honour” of being compared to club legend Peter Schmeichel by supporters.
One of the biggest success stories of Man United’s summer window was the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens from Belgian side Royal Antwerp.
The 23-year-old has been excellent between the sticks for Ruben Amorim’s side.
And his performances have not gone unnoticed by supporters.
United fans have begun serenading Lammens in recent weeks, with a humourous nod to one of their former heroes.
“Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” has been heard ringing around Old Trafford, with fans delighted at their new keeper
And while Lammens himself admits such comparisons are premature, he is delighted at the support fans have given him.
Manchester United’s transfer ambitions were dealt a blow this week with key target Ayyoub Bouaddi signing a new deal at Lille.
But in Lammens, they appear to have found a long-term answer to their goalkeeping issues.
Senne Lammens “Honoured” By Schmeichel Chants
Speaking via the Manchester United website, Lammens said: “It was really nice to hear it already in the first game [against Sunderland].
“I think it is a sign that the fans are happy with me.
“It feels really good that I can give them that trust.”
Lammens was seen speaking to legendary Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel ahead of United’s 2-1 against Liverpool in October.

“He just wished me luck and told me to be myself,” Senne revealed.
“He gave me good energy before the game against Liverpool, and obviously we won that, so I think that was very nice.”
The Belgian also discussed how he uses journaling as a method of keeping himself calm, adding that writing in his notebook helps him handle the intense pressure of elite football.
“It started when I started playing at Antwerp,” he said.
“I like to write things down before and after the game just to get my head in the right mindset, and then get things off your chest after the game.
“I write down things about how the opponent plays and how they put pressure on me, and also individual things I need to know during the game, nothing too special – just something to get my head into the right mindset.”
How Good Was Peter Schmeichel For Manchester United
Although tongue-in-cheek, comparisons to Peter Schmeichel are a massive compliment to any Man United keeper.
The Danish icon redefined what it meant to be an elite shot-stopper in the 1990s.
His athleticism, reflexes and towering presence were synonymous with the early Sir Alex Ferguson years at old Trafford.
Schmeichel made 398 appearances for United from 1991-1999.
He helped the club win five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup and the famous treble-completing Champions League in 1999 in his final game for the club.
Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time, he kept 180 clean sheets for United.

As well as his incredible shot-stopping, Schmeichel was well ahead of his time in terms of ball-playing.
His long, flat throws were used to devastating effect to launch counter-attacks with deadly precision.
And his general aura meant countless strikers crumbled when one-on-one against him.
It will take a long time for Senne Lammens to come close to reaching the heights of Peter Schmeichel.
But the young Belgian has made an ideal start at Old Trafford, and the fans have taken to him well.
Time will tell if he can build on that and maintain what has been a fantastic beginning with the club.
