Manchester United’s new signing: Guillermo Varela

After several months of scouting and researching the Red Devils have signed Uruguayan starlet Guillermo Varela from Penarol for an initial £1million rising to £2.5m. The Uruguayan penned a five year deal and he will represent his country Uruguay at the U-20 World Cup before joining the Premier League champions.

Varela mentioned that “I’m very pleased to be a part of this club, one of the best teams in the world. As everyone in the world knows, this is a huge club that has won everything and I really hope that continues.” The 20 year old impressed in a trial at Carrington in May and will now vie with Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez to become the 11th South American to make a first-team appearance for the Reds.

So who is he? Varela is a Uruguayan right back who was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on the 24th of March 1993. Varela began his club career at Penarol where he made his senior debut in June 2011 and he officially became David Moyes first signing at the club.

Varela will become the only Uruguayan footballer in the side and he mentioned “I’m very lucky there are quite a few Spanish-speakers here.” The player will join the United team for their pre-season tour which sees them play in Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.
