Marcus Rashford has urged Manchester United to take a leaf out of Liverpool’s book amid their ongoing “period of transition”.
The English attacker dropped the truth bomb in what was a lengthy interview on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker.
United have been described as being a club in transition, Rashford says, for a number of years and since Sir Alex Ferguson left they have struggled to hit the same heights having had a relatively large turnover in managers during that time.
Marcus Rashford compares Manchester United’s transition to Liverpool under Klopp
Ruben Amorim is the latest boss to try and Rashford feels the Portuguese needs time to really establish his ideas at Old Trafford, akin to the length of time Liverpool gave to Jurgen Klopp, to reap the benefits of their foundations.
“People say we’ve been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition. So it’s like the actual transition’s not started yet,” the Barcelona loanee said.
“To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. So this is the thing that I feel – it’s not easy. Because if it’s not going well, the fans demand [change]. But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is.
“When Liverpool went through this, they got Klopp, they stuck with him. They didn’t win in the beginning.
“People only remember his final few years when he was competing with City and winning the biggest trophies – he certainly didn’t win for three years.
“I feel like we’ve had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win… you end up in the middle of – you end up in no man’s land.”
Rashford says United ‘frustration’ will be worth it if they win trophies
Rashford was bombed out by Amorim and allowed to make his dream move to Camp Nou but he still understandably has regrets.
The 27-year-old admits he might have felt frustrated at his situation but he acknowledges that it will all have been for the good of Manchester United if it will lead to the club winning silverware at the end of it all.
“It’s not necessarily about being upset,” the England international said. “Yeah, it’s frustrating, but the be all and end all is, if it leads to trophies, everything gets put aside.
“Your individual career is nothing without the team version, and that’s a part of football I love.”
Rashford has hit 138 goals for United in 426 outings with his most prolific campaign coming back in 2022/23 when he notched 30 goals in all competitions.
