Match Report: Schalke 0-1 Barça

A goal from Bojan Krkic after twelve minutes was enough to give Barcelona a victory in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, which leaves Barça very close to a semi final place in this season’s Champions League. The performance was not pretty but the players showed the pride that seemed to be lacking recently to earn a deserved victory. Frank Rijkaard made just one change to the team that lost to Betis, with Milito returning to the defence in place of Thuram.

Barça started in much the same way as they had against Betis with a high percentage of possession. After eight minutes Xavi sent a great ball into Iniesta but for once his first touch was not good allowing Schalke keeper Neuer the chance to close down the angle and block.

Then in the twelfth minute Iniesta threaded a fine ball through to Henry, the Frenchman’s first shot was not great but Neuer failed to hold the ball and Henry had a second chance, this time he managed to get the ball across the face of the goal to the unmarked Bojan who had the simply job of putting the ball over the line, scoring his first ever Champions League goal.

Schalke had their first shot on goal after 17 minutes but Valdés made an easy save. The Germans continued to look for an equalizer but Barça’s possession game meant they had few opportunities. The game continued to resemble the Betis game with Barça creating very little but this time Barça seemed to show more determination in defence. Westermann and Altintop had attempts on goal but nothing that caused Valdés any difficulties.

Valdés had his first problem early in the second half when he failed to hold Ernst’s shot but Puyol was quick to avert the danger. Schalke were beginning to take control of the game and Barça didn’t manage a second half effort until the 63rd minute when Iniesta had a run followed by a weak shot.

In the 70th minute Schalke had their best chance yet when Pander crossed the ball back to Ernst whose shot was nearly deflected in by Asomoah. A minute later they came close again when Altintop hit wide a great chance after a cross from the right. Again it looked like there could be a repitition of the Betis game. Then Marquez came on in place of Toure and despite the Germans’ continued search for an equalizer their attempts could not find the target.

Barça caused one moment of danger at the other end when Sylvinho, who had just come on for Bojan, crossed towards Henry but Neuer dived in front of him to push the ball away. Schalke had one last great chance when Bordon’s header in injury time was tipped over by Valdés. The last few minutes were spoilt as the referee finally remembered he had yellow cards in his pocket and Giovani, Marquez and Puyol all got silly cards in injury time.

Barça: Valdés; Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Abidal; Xavi, Toure (Marquez 73′), Iniesta; Eto’o (Giovani 81′), Bojan (Sylvinho 85′), Henry.
