Can Max Dowman break the record for the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history? We think so – here’s why.
History was made at St James’ Park on Monday night. Rio Ngumoha, just 16 years and 361 days old, struck a dramatic added-time winner for Liverpool against Newcastle to become the fourth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.
In doing so, he also became the youngest-ever scorer for Liverpool, eclipsing Ben Woodburn’s record that had stood since 2016.
Ngumoha’s breakthrough highlights how rare it is for teenagers to find the net at this level — and why all eyes are now turning to Arsenal’s Max Dowman, the 15-year-old wonderkid tipped to go one better.
Youngest Premier League Goalscorers
The record for the youngest Premier League goalscorer still belongs to James Vaughan, who was just 16 years and 270 days old when he scored for Everton against Crystal Palace in April 2005.
Before Vaughan, the record had passed between some of English football’s most famous names. James Milner set the standard at 16 years and 356 days with a goal for Leeds United against Sunderland in 2002, only for Wayne Rooney to briefly hold it at 16 years and 360 days thanks to his famous strike for Everton against Arsenal later that same year.
Go back further and you find Michael Owen, who was 17 years and 143 days when he scored for Liverpool against Wimbledon in 1997, and Andy Turner, the first record holder in the Premier League era, who netted for Tottenham Hotspur against Everton at 17 years and 166 days in 1992.
Other teenagers have come close to Vaughan’s milestone but not quite surpassed it. Cesc Fabregas announced himself as a rising star when he scored for Arsenal at 17 years and 113 days in 2004, while Federico Macheda hit a memorable winner for Manchester United at 17 years and 226 days in 2009.
And now, after his dramatic late strike at Newcastle, Rio Ngumoha joins this exclusive list, becoming the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 361 days, as well as the youngest ever to do so for Liverpool.
Some of these players went on to define an era — and it is into this company that Max Dowman is now expected to step.
Why Max Dowman Can Break Premier League Record
So, what makes Max Dowman different? Well, firstly, age is firmly on his side. At just 15, Dowman has the entire 2025/26 season to etch his name into Premier League history.
He is also part of an Arsenal system that has already shown a willingness to trust young players at the highest level, with Ethan Nwaneri breaking the youngest-ever appearance record not long ago.
Crucially, he has the full backing of his manager. Mikel Arteta has spoken with awe about Dowman’s mentality, saying he has “zero hesitation” and carries a conviction to deliver that the Spaniard has never witnessed in someone so young.
That belief is matched by the player’s own ability. In his debut against Leeds, Dowman displayed confidence, pace, swagger and composure, looking every bit like a natural talent ready for senior football rather than a schoolboy thrown in at the deep end.
Teammates clearly wanted him to score — Declan Rice even passed up a shooting chance to feed him. Dowman also won a penalty – and has now done so in three of his four senior apperances (including friendlies).
The only missing ingredient was a goal. But from the way Arsenal rallied around him, it feels inevitable that moment is coming soon.
Some football betting sites have even opened up markets on whether he will break the record, with odds vastly in his favour.
Dowman could have broken Nwaneri’s record as the youngest-ever Premier League player last season, but eligibility rules blocked him. Now that he’s officially part of Arsenal’s senior picture, the path to another historic milestone is clear.
For two decades, James Vaughan’s record has stood untouched. But if there’s one player who looks destined to rewrite it, it’s Max Dowman.
