Mo Salah Baffling Ballon d’Or Record Pored Over as Liverpool Superstar Snubbed Again

Mo Salah AFCON

Mo Salah must be wondering what on earth it is he has to do to get a look in at the Ballon d’Or awards night.

The Egyptian superstar was once again snubbed at the prestigious award ceremony in Monaco where European football’s elite congregate to applaud and reward success.

English football talent was noted with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice being involved in the top 30 in spots 23 and 27 respectively.

Chelsea and Arsenal were awarded prizes for their efforts on an evening where the biggest talent on this continent were all under the same roof.

Napoli star Scott McTominay showed life begins after Manchester United but it was PSG attacker Ousmane Dembele who lifted the gong thanks to his terrific campaign last term when the club won the Champions League and their domestic title.

Mo Salah snubbed for Ballon d’Or again

Dembele hit 35 goals in all competitions last season and offered 16 assists to climb to the top of the vote and he beat Lamine Yamal and Vitinha, his teammate, on the podium.

Incredibly, Salah could only muster fourth place in the competition but his statistics tell a whole different story which is where the confusion might come in for Liverpool fans.

The 33-year-old found the back of the net 34 times last season while also chipping in with more than his fair share of assists with the number sitting at 23 from 52 matches.

Those numbers dwarfed Yamal’s and exceeded Dembele’s (just) but were still seemingly not enough to get the veteran over the line.

Salah was named PFA Player of the Year by his fellow pros in England’s Premier League for his other-worldly campaign, but on the European stage? Outvoted.

Salah’s record in Ballon d’Or is unbelievable

He does fall foul of a frustrating rule in this category with both PSG and Barcelona winning more silverware than the Reds last time out.

It also must be said that his fourth placed finish this year is the highest he has ever ranked, beating his finishes at fifth in both 2019 and 2022.

He also came in sixth despite a 44-goal season in 2018 and he finished seventh in 2021.

At the age he is now at, Salah’s chances of winning the coveted trophy may now be out of reach.

Which must go down as a shame considering he has grabbed Liverpool by the scruff of the neck for the most part since he signed and helped them towards nine trophies including the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
