The latest Newcastle injury update has left Eddie Howe sweating over the fitness of two key midfield stars ahead of Wednesday’s trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City.
This week sees Newcastle head to Manchester for the return leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
City won the opening leg 2-0 at St. James’ Park, giving Pep Guardiola’s side a huge advantage.
New City signing Antoine Semenyo grabbed the first, before Rayan Cherki doubled their advantage in stoppage time.
But the tie is far from over, and Newcastle remain hopeful of turning things around.
Last season, the Magpies won the competition to end their decades-long wait for a major trophy.
But they will be up against it to make a second successive final, having lost on their last 11 successive trips to the Etihad.
Newcastle have avoided defeat at City just once in their last 18 visits, a disastrous run stretching back to 2007.
That sole victory came on the EFL Cup last 16 back in 2014.
And it will be another tough encounter on Wednesday, especially given the latest Newcastle injury problems.
The Magpies’ lack of availability means fans will be especially happy after learning reports linking Arsenal to Sandro Tonali were wide of the mark.
It’s been a tough window for the Toon Army, but losing such a key player mid-season would have been especially damaging.
Newcastle Face Nervous Wait On Fitness Of Key Men
Ahead of this week’s cup clash, Newcastle were already depleted.
Defensive trio Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Kraft are all still out.
But Eddie Howe has been dealt a further blow, with crucial midfield pair Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley now major doubts.

Guimaraes suffered an ankle injury in the Champions League fixture against PSV, while Miley was injured during the warm-up in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Liverpool.
Eddie Howe Provides Newcastle Injury Latest
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s second leg at the Etihad, Howe confirmed the status of several players.
“Yeah, Bruno’s [Guimaraes] doing well,” he said.
“I don’t think he’ll make this game, but there’s a chance for the weekend. Sven Botman’s okay. Lewis [Miley], I’m not sure he’ll make this game either.”
Howe accepted his side will be up against it, but backed them to perform when it matters.

He added:”The second goal in the first game was a big disappointment for us coming so late but we still believe.
“We believe we have the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals.
“Collectively, the spirit within the group is there. It’s going to be an almighty challenge and there’s no bigger challenge than Manchester City away but we believe in ourselves and will give it a good go.”
Reflecting on recent results against Liverpool and PSG, Howe said: “Part of the Liverpool performance, for the first 30-35 minutes, was really strong.
“Against Paris, we had a strong performance all the way through, bar the first 20 minutes. Put those two together and we’ve got an outstanding chance.
“Firstly, we have to try and win the game. If we have that mentality that we’re going to try and get all the disciplines of our game in a good place and attack the game, let’s see what we can do.”
