Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that two of his summer signings will miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolves.
Midfielder Jacob Ramsey, a £40 million purchase from Aston Villa last month, suffered an ankle injury in the 0-0 draw at Leeds before the international break.
Meanwhile, Yoane Wissa picked up a knee issue while playing for DR Congo on Tuesday, meaning his debut following a £55m deadline day arrival from Brentford has been put on hold.
Yoane Wissa injury ends hope of £124m double debut
After Newcastle sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £125m on deadline day, fans were hoping to get a glimpse of their new £124m strike force on Saturday.
But while Nick Woltemade is in line to make his Magpies debut following a £69m move from Stuttgart, Howe said at a press conference on Friday that he will not be joined on the pitch by Wissa this weekend.
Hopes had been high that Wissa would be able to hit the ground running at St James’ Park, after the 29-year-old bagged 20 goals in 39 matches for Brentford last season.
“An established Premier League goalscorer is difficult to find,” the Newcastle boss said, reflecting on Wissa’s signing. “He’s got outstanding qualities, a history of scoring goals, and always did well playing against us [in the past].
“I admire the journey he’s been on, he’s made big steps in his career and adjusted and made them. Hopefully he can do that for us.
“He won’t make this game. He’s feeling the effects of the injury he picked up while he was away.”
When asked how long Wissa could be sidelined for, Howe replied: “It’s a knee injury but I don’t know any more. He’ll go away for tests and see a specialist. I can’t give you an update.”
On Woltemade, Howe said: “He’s fine [for Wolves]. He’s trained well and we’re really pleased with how he’s looked in the first couple of days.
“Big change for him, big opportunity for him. He’s got a great nature, a great character. He’s very calm and he’s gone straight into our training and not looked out of place. He’s shown his qualities. We’re really pleased with how he’s settled in.”
Newcastle — who have a 5.8% probability of winning the Premier League title, according to a recent study — were the fourth-biggest spenders in a record-breaking summer window. They splashed out £256.3m in total, with a net spend of £99.3m.
Jacob Ramsey ruled out until mid-October
Ramsey is set to be sidelined until mid-October after medical staff assessed him closely during the recent international break following his early withdrawal against Leeds.
“Jacob is our only other injury concern and he’ll miss the game,” Howe said on Friday. “He’s suffered from that tackle against Leeds, his ankle swelled up at half-time and he had to come off.
“Unfortunately I think he’ll be missing until the next international break so that’s a big blow.”
The next international window begins in the week commencing October 7, with Newcastle’s first game after the break coming away at Brighton on October 18.

Which games will Jacob Ramsey miss with injury?
Newcastle have seven matches between now and the next international break in October — and Ramsey is expected to miss them all.
After Saturday’s game with Wolves, Newcastle host Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night. That will be followed by fixtures against Bournemouth, Bradford, Arsenal, Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest.
Ramsey’s hopes of making his senior England debut in October also appear to have been dashed by his latest injury. The Three Lions play Latvia and Wales in October’s international break.
