Newcastle lose to Southampton in another lacklustre performance

Newcastle United, at the moment a team who are faltering after what looked to be a breakthrough season last year. Many of us geordies are asking why, is it the fact that this year we have european fatigue to deal with or just that we were simply punching above our weight last year. Today saw another poor display after losses to Swansea and West Ham and another bad result. Newcastle were ravaged by injuries to Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Fabricio Coloccini, undoubtedly key players. This caused our performance to lack any sort of pace, creativity and leadership, all key aspects for any team.

Adam Lallana got Southampton’s first goal after Tim Krul’s poor clearance put Newcatsle under pressure and Ramirez was allowed to square the ball into the path of Lallana. This came after Gaston Ramirez tested Krul and Rickie Lambert hit the bar from free kicks.

At half time torrential rain started to fall and at the start of the second half Newcastle’s first real chance came, the ball skidded through ,from a Papiss Cisse flick, to defensive midfielder Vurnon Anita, who could not beat the keeper one on one . After this it was all Southampton, Gaston Ramirez looked goood value for 10 million pounds and was a constant thaw in the Newcastle side, he set up Pucheon who’s shot was saved. Puncheon then turned provider after Lallana’s clever back heel saw him cross low, Krul could only push the slippery ball into the path of Ramirez who tapped in to round off a man of the match performance. Puncheon later hit the post and a late Jose Fonte header hit the bar.

Southampton’s first clean sheet of the season was another positive for Southampton, as those on Tyneside grow restless with Newcastle and their performances of late.   Comments welcome.
