Newcastle United had a difficult time of it in the summer transfer window to land their ideal signings ahead of their Premier League rivals.

The Magpies had a troublesome summer transfer window, at times, with their pursuits of a number of different options from their shortlist.

Nick Woltemade would join from VFB Stuttgart while big money was also spent on Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey who all arrived before the window closed.

There were, however, other names on Eddie Howe’s wish list as the manager was desperate to add new recruits to his squad in a bid to bolster the depth and improve to compete in the Champions League.

Newcastle missed out on Hugo Ekitike who joined Liverpool as well as, somewhat ironically, also losing their number one striker in Alexander Isak to the Reds following what was a long running saga throughout the summer months.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is Newcastle and Manchester United transfer target

The Tyneside outfit also fancied Joao Pedro from Brighton before he opted for a move to Chelsea, they wanted Nicolas Jackson who departed the Blues for Bayern Munich on loan and they had interest in James Trafford who signed for Manchester City.

Benjamin Sesko also chose Manchester United over St James’ Park and it is there at Old Trafford where Howe and Newcastle face a fresh challenge as they look to add a new goalkeeper to their squad.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, both clubs have serious interest in Barcelona goalie Marc-Andre ter Stegen who may well leave the Catalan giants either in January or next summer.

Barca boss Hansi Flick made the decision to sign another stopper in the summer with a view to making him his number one at Camp Nou in the form of Joan Garcia.

Newcastle transfer targets they lost out on

The former Espanyol custodian was a main target but has since picked up an injury which has kept him sidelined at times this term.

Ironically, Ter Stegen has also been knocked this campaign and has been in the stands with Polish ‘keeper Wojciech Szczęsny starting in their stead.

The plan moving forward, though, is to have Garcia between the sticks and that has meant Ter Stegen’s future remaining up in their air.

He is contracted until 2028 but both Newcastle and Manchester United could swoop for the player with Nick Pope unconvincing for the Magpies at times while Andre Onana may permanently leave the Red Devils.

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have previously made contact with Barca over their player while AS Monaco in Ligue 1 are keen.

It is also claimed that Barcelona won’t sanction any sort of loan with option or obligation unless their player specifically requests an exit – which he has not yet done despite having a “clear market” in England’s top flight.
