With many pundits tipping Bafetimbi Gomis to shine, if given the chance, in Euro 2008, after scoring a brace on his debut against Ecuador, papers have started speculating about his future. Gomis plays at Saint-Etienne, which is surely not a club with a realistic chance of European or domestic success in the near future. Thus, newspapers, tipping Gomis as the new Drogba, began publishing stories about interest from big European clubs, like Arsenal and Marseille.
Gomis has proven to be a loyal servant to his club Saint-Etienne and wanted to settle this affair BEFORE Euro 2008, rather than waiting for the end of the Championship. Gomis always stated his wish to stay at Saint-Etienne, and signed a 4-year contract at the club until 2012. This should ward off any interest in prizing the youngster away, even if he has a successful European tournament campaign.
“My priority has always been to stay at St Etienne, and it was important for me to sort out my personal situation before the start of Euro 2008,” Gomis told the French press.”
“I hope to be able to play in the UEFA Champions League with Les Verts.” – Bafetimbi Gomis
