Paulo Bento: Possible Right-Hand Man

After Queiroz’s departure left Manchester United looking for an assistant for Sir Alex Ferguson, when it’s just one month away from the 2008/09 Premiership kickoff, the favourite to land the post is 39-year old Sporting Lisbon Manager Paulo Bento. The former defensive-midfielder is one of the best young coaches from Portugal, and his appointment would continue to strengthen Man Utd’s ties with the club.

It is Carlos Queiroz himself who pointed out Bento to Manchester United, as he rates the young coach very highly. Bento would make it easier for Man Utd to land players from affiliated club Sporting Lisbon, with Joao Moutinho, Adrien Silva and Miguel Veloso known to be targets for the Red Devils. A formal statement from the club is expected if the board is to make contact with Paulo Bento, whose contract runs until summer 2009. Should Man Utd decide to appoint someone from the inside, Meulensteen and Phelan are the leading contenders for the post, while former player Laurent Blanc has also been mentioned.
