Pre-Tournament Friendly Roundup

In recent weeks Spain have made their final preparations for their Euro 2008 campaign in friendlies against Peru and the USA.

Luis Aragones’ side played Peru on the 31st May, and although playing some breathtaking football during the game, it was not easy by any means.

After taking the lead late in the first half, courtesy of Valencia hitman David Villa, after Xavi’s through ball.

However, although playing within themselves for most of the first period, Peru livened up during the second half, with Rengifo looping a header over Iker Casillas with 15 minutes to go – an unlikely draw seemed on the cards.

However, the Spanish clinched the win in stoppage time. On the second time of asking, Fabregas delivered a cross which was met by Capdevilla to seal a deserved win, but one that should have came a lot easier.

Spain are one of the favourites to win the Euro 2008 title, but made hard work of the United States as well. The first half of the clash saw an evenly matched game, with Tim Howard making some good saves from Xavi and Merseyside rival Fernando Torres.

However, class did shine through 11 minutes from time, as Barcelona’s influential midfielder Xavi was able to shake off his markers before cooly slotting home past Aston Villa target Brad Guzan, who had replaced Tim Howard in the American goal.

Spain survived a late scare when Casillas managed to stop a strike from Eddie Johnson, and were able to hold on for the win – a result that completed a 16-match unbeaten streak.

On the surface this would suggest great form – but these two friendlies show that Spain will have to become more clinical if they are to finally shake off the tag of perennial underachievers in international tournaments.
