The Premier League’s attacking trio, Manchester United’s RVP, Rooney and Hernandez

If you think of a striking combination you always think of the partnerships that have graced the games over the years, the Yorke-Cole’s, Shearer-Sutton’s and the Dalglish-Rush’s but not often discussed is the striking trio. When I mean trio I don’t mean two great strikers on the pitch and a great third on the bench or playing in the midweek game, I mean three strikers on the same pitch that really suit. A lot has been talked about the Van Persie and Rooney partnership and we all expected them to perform but the complimenting addition is Hernandez. His poaching ability is a huge addition to the juggernaut partnership of Rooney and RVP without him really snatching too much of the limelight with his impressive goal tally.

The ‘Perfect Trio’ might be a bold statement but when Rooney plays a little deep, you have three different types of strikers together. The true number 10, the true goal scorer and the true poacher and when Ferguson dares play them together with Rooney sitting just behind the front two, it is easy to see why Manchester United have scored 13 goals more than nearest rivals Manchester City and Chelsea. Ferguson really saw the value of RVP and not just as a goal scorer but how he fits in with the players he already had at his disposal, United really had a hole in the position that people before had failed to fill.

Mancini recently stated that RVP was the difference between the two Manchester Clubs but is Van Persie worth 7 points more to the title race than say: Aguero? RVP is one of the best strikers in the world but so are Aguero and Tevez while Dzeko and Balotelli both have the potential to be. The overall calibre at Manchester City may be better when you include Danny Welbeck into the equation but the results, points and goals scored speak for themselves and it can’t be said United’s success this season is down to solid defending.

Other teams have excellent attacking qualities, Chelsea’s attacking midfielders are sensational and Tottenham’s strikers and wingers are sublime but as a trio of strikers, I don’t think Ferguson could ask for much more when they are deployed together.
