Second Rangers Manager Candidate Pulls Out of Job Race – What We Know

Rangers continue their hunt for a new manager after sacking Russell Martin – but have now had TWO candidates pull out following a second round of interviews.

The Ibrox club got rid of the former Scotland international two weeks ago before the international break.

However they do not seem to be much further forward in the appointment of a replacement due to various factors.

Steven Gerrard was among the serious favourites at Rangers to take the position for a second time with the England and Liverpool icon out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in Saudi.

He held discussions with the boardroom which went well before he had a second round of conversations.

Rangers next manager search goes on

That led to Gerrard withdrawing himself from the process despite being more ready to take the job now than he was when he signed in the first place back in 2018.

Derek McInnes at Hearts was also being considered despite having turned down the job more than once in the past.

However with the Jambos competing with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, the 54-year-old seemingly felt the right thing to do was to stay at Tynecastle and do his job there.

That opened the door to former Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl whose credentials suited Gers even though the Owls were his first gig in first-team management in his own right.

Now, though, Sky Sports Germany are reporting that Rohl has also pulled out of the race to become the next Light Blues boss with similar reasons cited to Gerrard.

Renowned transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg took to social media to reveal to the support that Rohl informed the Ibrox hierarchy yesterday evening that he would not be making himself available from now.

Danny Rohl pulls out of Rangers manager race

He, like Stevie G, cites timing as the explanation.

Pletenberg tweeted on X: “Danny #Röhl has turned #Rangers down and informed the club today that he is not available.

“Although there had been several good discussions and he had become one of the top candidates for Rangers, the more detailed talks led to Röhl pulling out.

“From his perspective, the timing just isn’t right at the moment.”

It will surely come as a major blow to Rangers chiefs who had been impressed with the German’s plan and way forward that he outlined in his initial pitch.

And it means the club’s search goes on further beyond the length of time they might have hoped it would.

Rangers face Dundee United in the league this weekend and will do so with an interim staff in place, it is suspected.

Kevin Muscat is now one of the hot favourites for the hotseat.
