Real Madrid Accused of Isolating Xabi Alonso After Clash With Vinicius Junior

Spanish journalist Santiago Segurola has claimed Real Madrid sided with Vinicius Junior during the Brazilian’s “battle” with coach Xabi Alonso.

Since Alonso took over in the summer, his relationship with star forward Vinicius Jr. has been a topic of controversy.

During Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in October, Vinicius Jr. reacted strongly after Alonso subbed him off, going straight down the tunnel instead of the dugout.

Since that night, there have been several reports about the apparent rocky relationship between the pair.

However, Alonso has refuted reports of disharmony, insisting they are all pulling in the same direction.

On Onda Cero’s ‘Radioestadio Noche’ programme, Santiago Segurola said there was a rift between Xabi Alonso and Vinicius Jr., and Real Madrid had sided with the player.

He said (via Mundo Deportivo):

Real Madrid allowed Vinicius to win the battle with Xabi Alonso, leaving a coach who is suffering alone. The club’s silence speaks volumes about the little regard they have for him.

Vinicius Jr. is one of the most highly rated players in the world, and an important part of Real Madrid’s project. Los Blancos have been trying to tie him down to a new contract, but have not yet been successful.

According to reports, the disharmony inside the dressing room has made Vinicius doubt his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid ended 2025 with an underwhelming 2-0 win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Santiago Segurola claimed “the Sevilla game was one of Real Madrid’s worst in recent years” and “they played worse than against Celta.”

Vinicius Jr. started the game but was once again hooked before the final whistle. As he was coming off in the 83rd minute, some boos rang around the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Brazilian, who had a poor game by his lofty standards, reserved his reaction for then. However, only 10 minutes after the final whistle, Vinicius controversially changed his profile picture on Instagram.

The 25-year-old replaced his image of displaying the Real Madrid jersey with one featuring his national colours. This move has caused quite a stir on social media, with many claiming the boos swayed Vinicius to change his profile picture.

Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, claimed the Madridistas had the right to express their opinions.

The fans have the right to express their opinion“, says Xabi Alonso.

It was a tough match, and we realise we can improve. We’ll use this time to rest.”

Los Blancos return to action with a clash against Real Betis in LaLiga on 4 January.
