San Marino v England Preview

England take on San Marino this Friday at the 7,000 capacity Serravalle Stadium in San Marino. England ‘s 150th anniversary celebrations have seen them take on Brazil at Wembley where they beat the ‘A Selecao’ side 2-1. England currently sit in second behind Montenegro in Group H and England manager Roy Hodgson has had to deal with a host of selection issues including withdrawals from defenders Rio Ferdinand, Gary Cahill and Dawson allowing the call-ups for Joleon Lescott, Steven Caulker and Steven Taylor.

Looking at the latest betting provided by bwinbetting.com the odds for five or more goals for England comes at a low 1.45 and a straight win comes at 1.01. San Marino, a team which has lost their last five encounters against England have a very low chance of producing an upset, even though they are playing at home. How many goals will be scored by England is the question and bets of Rooney or Defoe goal come in at 2.75 and 3.50. Whether Roy Hodgson will play his best side or will focus on his youth for this tie is unknown but we do expect a significant result if he plays either or.

England are coming off two straight wins against Brazil and Moldova and in the first tie between England and San Marino resulted in a 5-0 drubbing at Wembley with braces coming from Manchester United’s Rooney and Danny Welbeck and a goal from Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The question is not whether there will be goals, but how many will be scored?

Roy Hodgson may or may not play his youth players which might see the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck, Walker and Cleverley getting starts. It may be foolish not to start Lampard who is in prolific form for Chelsea after scoring his 200th goal for the club and Gerrard looks set to lead his team out for his 102nd ‘Three Lions’ appearance. England are still missing injured Wilshere who was influential in the friendly against Brazil which will open up the midfield for Scott Parker or Carrick to step in.

I can see goals coming from Defoe, Rooney and Lampard as England look to build on their goal difference of 10 which is the same as Montenegros’. Monetengro face Moldova away for their first qualifying match this week and then they face England at the City Stadium, Podgorica in Motenegro which will be a tough outing for the ‘Three Lions’.
