Arsenal is off to a flying start this season with losing just 3 matches in 12 games (in the BPL) and sit on second in the Champions League ‘Group of Death’ with 12 points in 6 games and have drawn Bayern Munich for the last 16. Reports have surfaced in the newspaper that Arsene Wenger will be offered a new 8 million per year deal for the coming three years. Arsenal fans will be ecstatic to here this news but hold on, is giving Arsene Wenger the contract now the right decision?
Arsenal is having the time of its life by having probably the best start to a season in years by just losing once at home to Aston Villa in a dismal performance by the referee who just didn’t want to give Arsenal the advantage and most decisions went against them (not that I am blaming the ref, Arsenal weren’t up to the mark.) Everyone was worried that how the injury hit squad would cope up with the pressure of various competitions with 16 year old lads on the bench and with just a single striker in Oliver Giroud. Social sites were flooding with #WengerOut and #InArseneWeRust. But the North London Derby in which Arsenal beat their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspurs who had spent over 100 million without spending a single dime and making a clever signing in Mathieu Flamini who has given Arsenal the physical presence and steel required which they had lost reinstated the faith in Wenger.
Then came the deadline day buy of Messut Ozil which shocked the footballing world and sent the message that Arsenal had finally learnt how to spend money and were ready to fight for the title. Clever and bargain buys by Wenger have Arsenal sitting on top of the EPL with 35 points from 16 games, 2 clear from rivals Liverpool. Aaron Ramsey is replaying the faith Wenger had in him by playing the best football he has ever played, Wenger never lost his faith in the lad when he was not supported by very own Gooners.
But hang on, remember the eight year trophy drought? Eight years without a trophy for a club like Arsenal is a worrying matter. Ofcourse the switch from Highbury to The Emirates crippled Arsenal financially and yet the managed to finish in the top four in every single year is no small feat but the lack of silverware at the Emirates stops world class players from coming. Every year Arsenal lost top players as Wenger failed to hold his beloved players, players who he had nurtured in their youth turned their backs on him and left for greener pastures. Other clubs have won silverware and grown into destinations favoured over Arsenal.
With a big financial budget he should EARN his contract by winning a trophy and delivering to the club.
