Talking Points # 2

Once again we need your comments to make this feature work. We received 8 comments last thread, which is a reasonable amount considering it was our first article of this type but hopefully this will receive more comments.

This Weeks Questions:

  • Destined for the top? Can Ryan Bennett or Joe Lewis make it in the Premier League following reported interest from top division sides?
  • On fire. Just how many goals will ‘the holy trinity’ score this season?
  • Fickle football. Will Southampton’s sacking of Alan Pardew hinder their chances of promotion this season?

THE DEBATE – Premier League Quality?

Joe Lewis and Ryan Bennett were both rumoured with a move away from London Road this week and although Bennett has rubbished the speculation surrounding his future, I couldn’t help but think whether either of these two young Englishmen could make it in the top division.

England U21 international, Joe Lewis, is possibly the player at Peterborough who divides fans opinions the most. Some will say that he is a future England goalkeeper whilst others feel he is an average League One ‘keeper. I fall somewhere in the middle. There is no doubt that Lewis has a great future ahead of him, a superb shot-stopper and a real talent at such a youthful age means that he will, in my opinion, play in the Premier League one day. Admittedly, there are still weaknesses in his game; his ability to claim crosses is almost non-existent and he is still prone to a fumble when put under pressure but he certainly has the natural ability to become an excellent goal-keeper.

What many seem to forget is that Bennett is still only 19. He has a lot of developing to do yet he is amongst the starters, for now at least, in this Peterborough United squad. There are not many 19 year olds that can claim they have played consistent Championship football either. Nor is it common for a player of so young in years to of captained a club side, at whatever level, but Bennett was captain at Grimsby. It is of no surprise that the youngster has led his country out at youth level with this sort of experience already in his career. Whether Bennett will develop into a Premier League quality centre back remains to be seen though. He shows moments of brilliance but his youthfulness still hinders him at times and he is prone to the occasional error of judgement. Bennett is no doubt another prospect at this football club but can either he or Joe Lewis ever reach the heights of the Premier League?

England’s number one? Joe Lewis has already had one senior call-up.

THE DEBATE – How Many Goals will Boyd, McLean and Mackail-Smith have between them by the end of this season?

Who are the top three scorers in League One? That’s right, Mackail-Smith, McLean and Boyd. With 14 goals between them in just six games the deadly trio have already found their shooting-boots and are back on form after a distinctly mediocre season last year.

The question is though. How many will they score this season? If they maintain this scoring record, in the league, which has been a source of nine goals in four games, by the end of the season, they will have scored over one hundred goals between the three of them. If they do that we will win this league with ease. But how many do you predict the holy trinity will score this season? Can they reach three figures?

Just how many will they score?

THE DEBATE – Alan Pardew’s sacking highlights the fickleness of football

A season and four games after being appointed as manager of ‘The Saints’ Alan Pardew has been sacked as manager of Southampton. But why? Yes, last season may have been a disappointment, they wouldn’t have made the automatics even without a ten point deduction but this deduction would have been a massive psychological factor in the player’s minds. It can’t be easy starting the season ten points behind everyone else.

And after a inconsistent, but not particularly poor, start to this season Alan Pardew has been sacked. It comes as a further surprise after the club won 4-0 against Bristol Rovers and looked to be beginning to find the form needed to fulfil their early season promise where many pundits and football fans, including myself, predicted them to be the league winners this season. The sacking, in my opinion, will have a detrimental effect on the team. As Peterborough fans we know all about the effects of instability on a football club after such a turbulent season last year and this sacking may just mean that Southampton have to spend another season at League One level.

Pardew’s sacking. Deserved or not?

Please comment. As I said, this feature will not work without your input. We had a large number of readers last time but only a small amount of comments so any in-put would be hugely appreciated by us.
