Tino Livramento has been ruled out of Newcastle United action for as long as eight weeks.
The defender is set to miss up to 11 matches for the Magpies after the injury he suffered against Arsenal was assessed by the club’s medical team.
The England international has made eight appearances for the club this season so far and is considered a major part of elite boss Eddie Howe’s squad and the way he wants his side to play.
And that is why the news comes as a bitter blow for Newcastle who will be without Livramento for massive games on the horizon.
He will miss coming fixtures against Benfica, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City to name just a few but there are other games in the Champions League he will be sidelined for as well as in the Premier League.
Tino Livramento Newcastle United injury could see him miss 11 matches
The 22-year-old full international will also be missing from Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squads for World Cup qualifiers against the likes of Latvia, Serbia and Albania.
It comes amid injury to Yoane Wissa who was the subject of a FIFA call for compensation this month.
Manager Howe had been nervous to learn the extent of his player’s injury and while it is a hefty chunk of matches, the boss will be somewhat relieved that he won’t miss even longer.
However it does give the former Bournemouth boss a bit of a headache in terms of personnel without too many options to replace the £32million Southampton signing.
Newcastle see Livramento as a big part of how they play and he will certainly be a big miss.
And on his flank – the right-hand side – there are arguably not too many players who can be trusted to do the job.
Kieran Trippier, 35, came off the bench to replace his countryman after the injury vs the Gunners and he remains a serious option to be given the chance to start in Livramento’s stead.
Who could replace Livramento for Newcastle?
Trippier has featured seven times this term so far and he has had a hand in big games at big moments. His experience is also not to be forgotten.
That is on the right-flank.
But what about on the left?
Livramento’s versatility has had him deputising on that side of the defence and Lewis Hall is obviously the main man on that flank.
The 21-year-old will not be able to play every minute of every match and Harrison Ashby – perhaps not in Europe given he has not been named in the squad – could do similar and play on the other side than his traditional right.
In the youth squad there could be the option to bring through Alex Murphy who was prevented from leaving in the summer.
