Torres = Goals, Goals, Goals

Spain, the reigning European champions, go into this summer’s World Cup in South Africa as one of the hot favourites to lift the coveted trophy. They have won many admirers for there style of play which at times is not only a joy to watch, but mesmerising. Whilst it is great for a team to play good football they all need an end product, that end product is to score goals that matter – to put the ball in the onion bag as some might say.

Reigning European Champions, Spain

Scoring goals are key to any side’s chances of success and Spain have the arsenal to do that, with talented forwards in David Villa, Llorente, Bojan, Negredo and more. Good forwards they are but it is the name of Fernando Torres that is on everyone’s lips, many feel that this summer is the perfect opportunity for ‘El Nino’ to show the people why he is regarded as the world’s best striker.

Torres started his career with Atlético Madrid, he made his professional debut in 2001 and finished his career with the club having scored 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances. He joined Liverpool in 2007, after signing for a club record transfer fee. He marked his first season wearing the famous number 9 shirt by being the first Liverpool player, since Robbie Fowler, to score more than 20 league goals in a season – this instantly made him the darling of the Kop and a menace for Premier League defences.

He made his Spanish international debut against Portugal in 2003 and has since won 71 caps for his country and has scored 23 goals in the process forming a lethal patnership with David Villa. He has played in three major tournaments, Euro 2004, 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008. He did not score a goal at Euro 2004, but managed to hit the back of the net 3 times in World Cup 2006. It was the stage of Euro 2008 where Torres had finally estabishled himself on the international stage, as it was his impressive displays and goals which paved the way for long awaited glory for the Spanish underachievers. Torres scored the winning goal for Spain in their 1–0 win over Germany in the UEFA Euro 2008 Final, a display which rightly earned him the man of the match award and a place in the team of the tournament line-up.

Spain will have high hopes of winning the World Cup this summer – their group consists of Chile, Honduras and Switzerland. To do this they will need Torres at the top of his game and fingers crossed, free of any injuries which so far have plagued him so far this season. One thing is for certain, he won’t be short of service with the likes of Iniesta, Mata, Xavi, Fabregas and Silva providing unlimited ammuntion for ‘El Nino’ to punish defences with his uncanny goalscoring ability.

Defences beware as there’s a new kid in town, goes by the name of Torres, Fernando Torres… has boots will score goals, many of them.
