Why are Tottenham not pushing for the title?

What’s stopping Tottenham from really pressing for top spot? They have one of the best teams on paper in the Premier League better than Man United in my opinion. They have great squad depth throughout and although they are only 13 points behind United and a game in hand they are still 150/1 to win the title so there still not considered a real threat.

They look like reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League and who’s to say they can’t go further if the draw favours them but back in England they look like finishing in 5th and having to settle for the Europa League next season.

Taking a look through their squad really shows their strength and quality.

They have a good keeper in Gomez not world class but after a very shaky start he has since settled and shown some signs of real class, plus with Cudicini in reserve you can’t say this part of the squad needs investment.

They have Vedran Ćorluka at right back and although he is out injured at the moment Alan Hutton steps right and fills the void. At left back they have Assou-Ekotto not the best but by no means the worst, a possible weakness in the defence but with several Centre Defenders in the squad who can easily step in to the position such as Bassong and Kabul makes it difficult to single this out as a problem.

Then at centre back they have real strength and especially in depth, the only problem being some of them are injury prone. With the likes of Dawson who is always improving and Gallas who has added something to the side since his arrival, if that’s not good enough they can always call upon Woodgate, King or Kabul injuries permitting. Now what other team can boast options like that at the back, CB a problem? I don’t think so.

The wingers at Tottenham are a massive threat. They have Gareth Bale on the left who in the last 6 months has gone on to become one of the big name players in Europe, his performance in the San Siro against the defending Champions has been a highlight of the tournament so far. In particular how he made players like Maicon and Lucio look foolish has made him a transfer target for several big European clubs this summer.

On the other wing is Aaron Lennon just the mention of his name makes you think about his pace that’s just how scary this guy can be for defenders. However with stats of 3 goals and 7 assists in 34 games he is still some way off the level we expect him to achieve. As a winger these stats really count, it’s not good enough just to be playing well every week.

In the middle of the park they have a couple of World Class players in Modric and Van Der Vaart but it’s not as if defensive players are a problem. They have to choose from Huddelstone, Palacios and now even Sandro who at 21 is looking a great prospect for the near future. Then to top things off they have Pienaar who turned down a transfer from Chelsea to join spurs, plus Kranjcar and even Jenas if required.

Upfront is the only place where I am not so keen and think they need to look to invest in the summer. They have Peter Crouch who has the best goals per game record for an English striker in recent years and his stats show this season he can add something to the team, having played 26 Premier League games and getting 7 assists show what he can bring to a side but with only 2 goals does not make him a first team player for a top four club in my opinion. They also have Defoe a well know player but has not scored a goal this season in 13 Premier League games. They do have Pavlyuchenko who has scored 7 goals in 20 league games but when you consider that Van Persie has scored 10 in 14 games, Drogba has 10 in 26 games and Tevez and Berbatov are the top two scorers in the League. Tottenham clearly have a problem upfront but when Harry Redknapp can let Robbie Keane leave and sold Darren Bent who since his departure has become one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League, he clearly feels the players he has are better.

Let’s say Tottenham were to strengthen their strike force this summer, who to buy can be a real problem with the recent transfers of Torres to Chelsea for a British record £50m and Andy Carroll to Liverpool for £35m means finding someone for good value can be hard. The names being thrown around seem great in theory like Agüero, Fabiano and Hulk but what could become and expensive flop means getting it right is crucial for Tottenham.

So why are Tottenham only challenging for 4th when there are so many signs they should be pushing for 1st? Would a new striker make the difference for them?

I am for one hoping that they manage to qualify for the Champions League and Harry can keep this side together and further improve his squad because I feel failure to do so will result in several players leaving in the summer and the breaking of a squad with real potential of becoming the Premier League Champions.
