My views on Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos to Arsenal

According to today’s reports, Germany’s Per Mertesacker and Brazil’s Andre Santos are going to join Arsenal.  I don’t expect them to be heroes for the team straight away as they need the time to gel with the team.

So, how they can be useful to Arsenal  

Per Mertesacker , 27 years old – To be honest, even Peter Crouch will be afraid of Per Mertesacker because of his height. 6.6ft is consider a giant in EPL.  Most importantly, his positioning is good enough to win the ball back from the fast strikers. He will be a good addition to the squad because he is an experienced defender / leader and able to help the team to clear away high balls without difficulties. Finally, I can see that there is a balance on speed and strength in Arsenal’s defence.  

Rating: 9/10

Andre Santos, 28 years old – Could he be the next Roberto Carlos?  He is a good attacking full back who can bring the ball up with his skills and even score a few goals for the team. How about his defensive abilities? Definitely, we cannot compare him with other defensive left backs. I believe the rest of the defenders on the pitch must cover his area properly if he wants to rush up and join in the attack during the match.
