Wayne Rooney Gets the Weekend Off

Wayne Rooney has been the biggest attention grabber this weekend surrounding the Premier League. But following his verbal goal “celebration” at Upton Park, he will be suspended for this weekend’s game versus Fulham.

After scoring a hat trick in the space of 15 minutes last weekend, Wayne Rooney’s infamous celebration made the news and talking points for the following few days as the FA handed the England star a two game suspension.

On Thursday, the FA upheld their decision, meaning Wayne Rooney will get the weekend off having scored Manchester United’s only goal in their 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final tie.

While his ban leaves him fresh ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge, Wayne Rooney will be suspended for Manchester United’s FA Cup semi final with Manchester City next weekend. How bigger blow will that be for Manchester United’s treble-chasing side?

With Wayne Rooney absent, Mark Hughes and his Fulham side have every reason to be confident they can get a result at Old Trafford on Saturday. Fulham ran out impressive 3-0 winners over a spent-looking Blackpool side last weekend and have been difficult to beat since the turn of the year.

Brede Hangeland scored a late equaliser when these two sides met at Craven Cottage in the second game of the season; five minutes after his own goal had given Manchester United the lead. West Bromwich Albion are the only visitors to take points away with them from Old Trafford so far this season.

After Fulham, Manchester United’s remaining home Premier League fixtures are against Everton, Chelsea and Blackpool.

Fellow Premier League title challengers Arsenal travel to Blackpool on Sunday, desperate to get back to winning ways, having failed to take three points from a single league game since February 23rd when they beat Stoke City 1-0. Interestingly, seven of Arsenal’s eight remaining league fixtures are scheduled for a Sunday, while the other is on a Wednesday night at White Hart Lane – they have no remaining Premier League fixtures on a Saturday.
