After the humiliation of the mid-week Champions League loss to Man United, Arsenal fans were optimistic leading up to their side’s game at home to Chelsea. The Emirates was packed, as usual, as Arsenal started well, having at least 5 chances in the first 10 minutes. But, on 21 minutes, disaster struck as a free kick, cheaply given away by Abou Diaby, was floated in by Drogba, and Alex headed against the post, which directed it into the back of the net. Arsenal couldn’t settle again, and 20 minutes later, Nicolas Anelka turned Samir Nasri and was allowed by the Arsenal defence to stroll towards the 18 yard box. As he did, finally a challenge came in from Mikael Silvestre, but it was too late, as Anelka let fly from about 25 yards. The ball flew past Manuel Almunia in the Arsenal goal, and nestled in the bottom right hand corner. Arsenal hadn’t lost for 21 league games before today, but now had a mountain to climb. It got worse on 51 minutes. As the lead was comfortable, Ashley Cole started to charge up the left flank. When he did, it caused problems for Bakary Sagna, who already had the in-form Florent Malouda. He wasn’t getting any help from Theo Walcott, though, who had threatened early in the game, but had since faded out. Cole had the ball, and before he could cross, was met by Lukasz Fabianski. Unfortunately, Fabianski was too slow, and was then stranded as the cross deflected off Kolo Toure into Fabianski’s goal. A brief piece of hope was handed to Arsenal as Nicklas Bendtner headed home a Sagna cross. But Malouda made it 4-1 with an offside goal to humiliate Arsenal further.
